Campaign Complicates Allen's Ambitions
Campaign Complicates Allen's Ambitions
By RON FOURNIER, AP Political Writer

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Republican Sen. George Allen (news, bio, voting record) had hoped for an easy slide to re-election and, from there, a launching pad to the presidency.

So far, it hasn't worked out that way.

A loyal foot solider for President Bush, the Virginia lawmaker faces a surprisingly tough re-election campaign that is keeping him pinned down in his state while other Republican presidential hopefuls traverse Iowa, New Hampshire and other important places in the 2008 nomination fight.

Just as worrisome, the Senate campaign has already dredged up a few unpleasant issues — both personal and political — that could shadow his plans for 2008.

Virginia Democrats on June 13 will choose Allen's opponent — either former Reagan administration Navy Secretary James H. Webb or businessman Harris Miller. Many national party leaders say Webb, a Republican-turned-Democrat and best-selling author, is their best hope for taking the seat.
(snip/...)

1. Why do these eastern idiots think they look good in a western hat?
Seems like so many want to pretend to be a cowboy, and they just can't pull it off!

8. Real Virginians don't dress like cowboys.
Allen is from California where his father was head coach of the Rams.

He came here when his father coached the Redskins and went to UVA. Then he didn't go home like we wanted him to.

I think Allen wants to be like Bush with the cowboy boots. Or maybe he just wants to be like John Wayne. Who knows what goes on in that devious mind of his.

Someone, Please! just make him go away!

2. That watermelon picture . . . .
Are they mocking somebody?

It's hard not to think so, given Allen's infatuation with the Confederacy.

5. Webb for Senate
If we can get him through the primary in June, we have a really good chance to pick this seat up. I hope, as a Virginian, that we can kick that slimeball Allen (or as I like to call him, Howdy Doody) out of congress.

9. What a goober. Another fake cowboy who thinks dipping snuff and
wearing Western clothing makes him manly.

10. great article and i heard about most of the stuff mentioned here at DU
a long time ago---hat tip to DU as usual. Love this little snip from Larry "roadkill on ma head" Sabato---

Sing it Larry!

"They're going to find Allen in some ways socially unacceptable, not just politically unacceptable," Sabato said.
