Bush urged to give Putin the cold shoulder

President George W. Bush may give Vladimir Putin the cold shoulder when the Russian president hosts the Group of Eight summit in St Petersburg if hardliners in the US win a policy battle over how to respond to what they see as Moscow's increasingly wayward behaviour.

While there is no doubt the US president will attend the July summit, despite calls by Republican senator John McCain, and others, for a boycott, Mr Putin could be on the receiving end of what is called the "minimalist approach".

"There is a push for the president to do the bare minimum in St Petersburg," said Nikolas Gvosdev, editor of the National Interest, a publication of the Nixon Center think-tank that promotes a "realistic" US approach to Russia.

This would mean no "chumminess" with Mr Putin, such as private dinners, and could involve a side-trip to a former Soviet satellite as a platform for a speech on democracy. Viktor Yushchenko has invited Mr Bush to Kiev, but that visit might come in June, provided the president of Ukraine has formed a coalition government.

8. I just don't believe what I'm reading today -
it's like they are really willing to take on the ENTIRE WORLD. I mean that. Look at the headlines on the LBN! The US punishes....Venezuela...withdraws aid from Ecuador....Cheney insults Putin...vows to punish Uzbekistan....

I swear this is absolutely lunacy! I've never seen such shitty behavior.

(grumbling) I hope the world give it to them....with interest.

12. Our li'l George will put his feet up on the furniture just to be petulent.
He'll take his crayons to draw on the walls. I must admit after seeing how much vacation time George takes, the minimalist approach seems to be right up his alley.

His minimalist approach worked so well in his fly-over of New Orleans. :sarcasm:

It could be worse though, he could send V.P. Cheney and Amb. John Bolten in his place, and let them 'fix' things.

14. That would be funny
An ex member of the KGB (and a 6th dan black belt) vs a corporate Draft dodger and a man who swallowed a walrus. Tearing strips of those who 'make their own fantasy reality' wouldn't even cause Putin to break a sweat.

More likely though, he'll just sit back and be quietly resered but memorising every slight and snub - and when they come begging cap in hand for help or a deal at a later date, calmly repay every one with interest.

17. This is kindergarten politics...
you don't snub world leaders like this. What a bunch of jackasses we have leading us.

The real problem Bushco has with Russia has nothing to do with anti-democratic tendencies. Bush need look no further than the nearest mirror to find a wayward autocrat in the making. The bully boys talk a good load of smack about democracy, yet are chummy with some of the most brutal and repressive regimes in the world - who happen to be our allies in the so called 'war on terror'

Indeed the problem is that Putin is doing what one could only expect him to do. That is to further Russian interests, which don't coincide with Bushco's interests. (I won't say American interests because the Admin seems to be constantly working against our interests)

19. Did you see USchenko mentioned in the article?
The question at the summit will be: Who is going to feed Ukraine from now on? If it is a US puppet, has a new US ambassador -former spook, an overseer for USchenko installed regime.

Russia supplied Ukraine with cheap gaz and oil for the last 15 years or so. Now it is going to charge Ukraine the full amount. US will be kindly asked by Pootie-Poot to foot the bill for the newly acquired colony.

I see it happening.

21. ...Moscow's increasingly wayward behaviour...
Oh my gosh, that is so frigging funny. The most criminal cabal on the planet is considering giving the Russian leader the 'cold shoulder' because of THEIR WAYWARD BEHAVIOR. Increasingly wayward no less.

LMFAO!!
