Jobless claims surge, Puerto Rico blamed
But jump to 367,000 is blamed mostly on government shut down in Puerto Rico
May 18, 2006: 8:47 AM EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New claims for jobless aid unexpectedly surged last week by 42,000 as a partial government shutdown in Puerto Rico added 46,000 unadjusted claims, a government report showed Thursday.

First-time claims for state unemployment insurance benefits rose to a seasonally adjusted 367,000 in the week ended May 13 from an upwardly revised 325,000 claims the previous week, the Labor Department said.

Excluding claims related to the government shutdown in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, seasonally adjusted initial claims would have been closer to 312,000, a Labor Department analyst said.

Government layoffs in Puerto Rico started May 1 because of a funding crisis, but the situation has since been resolved and the Labor Department analyst said it should not be a factor next week.<snip>

1. INVADE!!!
They are just doing it on purpose you know they are!!!

BTW- Puerto Ricans can serve in the military, pay no income tax, but can't vote and have no representation other than on some committees and with a non voting member of the House.

8. still occupied, crap democracy at the hacienda
no states rights, just the right to be poor.

Puerto rico is a shining light in the carribean, cuba must be ssooooo jealous,
Haiti surely wants to be invaded right proper next time, and maybe the
dominican republic will ask for an invasion as well so they can get the
benefit of a passport without democracy.

They should replace the word citizen with consumer and offer consumers right
instead of that unread bill of rights.

3. actually I find that reasonable
approximately 250,000 are on the government pay role. about half if not more were left temporarily unemployed during the government shut down .

5. Well the article ascribes "only" 46,000 to PR's situation, so the bulk is
still the "rest" of the U.S.

Another convenient excuse. MKJ

6. If tiny Puerto Rico can so adversely affect our national economy...
We're in a lot more trouble than any of us ever imagined.

Population: 3,828,506

Jesus God! This is really grasping at straws, y'all!

7. these are jobless claims
it doesn't say how many new jobs were added, it just reports jobless claims. I am not making excuses just pointing out, all of a sudden at least 40,000 people in PR almost simultaneously applied for benefits.

9. Well, you and I are operating on two different premises.

You believe the jobless claims report coming from the Treasury Secretary.

I don't. Not after the manipulation of the numbers after Katrina.

Interesting that the loss of a half million jobs didn't seemingly cause a blip in the claims (or a small couple of weeks blip, at the most).

I would wager that the impact continues...we just don't hear about it.

And, Puerto Rico gets blamed. Welcome to DU. :hi: MKJ

sorry, I misread your post number, you've been here for a while.
How about a belated welcome. :toast:
