Poll: Border Plan Gives Bush A Boost
Most Americans Approve Of Sending National Guard To U.S.-Mexico Border

(CBS) There's growing support for President Bush on the hot-button issue of immigration, according to a CBS News poll.

Most Americans say they approve of the immigration reform proposals the president outlined in a nationally televised address earlier this week. They're also somewhat optimistic that Congress will pass an immigration bill by year’s end.

Sixty-two percent favor the president's plan to station up to 6,000 National Guard troops at the U.S.-Mexico border, while 32 percent are opposed.

Six in 10 also approve of Mr. Bush's proposal for a guest worker program, which would let foreign workers stay in the United States on a temporary basis and then return to their home country.

14. might be true
but if this poll is accurate, then the 60%+ favoring this are in the sensible middle. And the sensible middle doesn't include his base. So even if this is true, it's not good news for him.

Notice, too, that they apparently only polled on this one issue.

2. There is no such thing as a guest worker unless the USA changes
migra laws. Currently, under such a law after 4 years the guest worker will be able to apply for US citizenship. Bad enough right? Well 5 to 6 years after he/she is granted citizenship he/she then can sponser his parents in. This will amount to a back door into US citizenship for upwards of 100 million new US citizens in the next 20 years. It will also allow guest workers to enroll in welfare and medicaid programs rendering any taxes guest workers pay meaningless. More smoke and mirror slight of hand by shrub inc. Another mis-conception is this only applies to mexican guest workers, again it will apply to any and all citizens of any country world wide.

12. You better believe it! You have ID the enitre charade.
People just do't know how many guest workers there are in the US right now who ARE NOT Mexicans and a lot of them are no smarter or no more industrious than Americans whose roots go back to pre-Civil War. If people only knew about the "re-settlement" programs that have brought in hundreds of thousands of immigrants over the past 3 decades. And the real kicker is the dual citizenship aspect which allows these people who have been charged with crimes to return to their native country and never be criminally prosecuted. Organized crime sydicates use these re-settlement and guest worker programs to the max.

3. The most important sentence in the article
"Mr. Bush's overall approval rating remains low at just 35 percent, but that's a 4-point increase from before his immigration speech."

With a 4% margin of error I think that's called a wash.

4. You can bet that CBS DIDN'T ASK
people if they would support holding businesses responsible for hiring illegal immigrants as a better long term solution to immigration than the temporary deployment of 6000 weary NG troops along the border.

And notice that never got into Bush's speech (I know people who watched it.)

As for the poll, even Rasmussen has Bush going down after the speech.

But the polls were all about the plan, and not duh-man.

Nice try, CBS.

Conservatives may disagree all they like, at the end of the day they will still vote Republican along with moderate repugs. Can't take the elections for granted that's for sure!

15. People might agree with him on this ONE issue...
However, he's hoarked up so many HUGE issues, that the immigration issue is almost mute.

Many agree with Bush's plan on immigration. Big whoop.

That doesn't translate into anything significant in his general poll numbers.

The man is an abomination and a huge failure.

You can't rip the country to shreds and then claim victory when one of your ideas is not totally hated.

I wouldn't care if Junior cured cancer, gave us all $10,000 checks in the mail and invented a tasty, calorie-free chocolate bar. Nothing could make up for the nightmare he's created since he was elected.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
