Democratic Rival Forces Lieberman Into a Primary (NYT)
Democratic Rival Forces Lieberman Into a Primary

By WILLIAM YARDLEY and STACEY STOWE
Published: May 20, 2006

HARTFORD, May 19 — A businessman with little political experience has forced Senator Joseph I. Lieberman into an August primary, surprising even his own supporters by winning more than twice the number of delegates he needed at the State Democratic Party's nominating convention Friday night.

Ned Lamont, a cable television executive from Greenwich who has opposed Senator Lieberman largely over the senator's support for the war in Iraq, won 505 of the 1,509 delegates who cast votes — about 33 percent, compared with the 15 percent required to force a primary.

Mr. Lieberman, by winning two-thirds of the vote, however, easily won the party's endorsement.

Cheers erupted as Mr. Lamont swept several small towns, where he typically fared better than he did in larger cities like Hartford, Bridgeport and New Haven, which have entrenched Democratic establishments. Some supporters of Mr. Lamont said they had hoped to win only the necessary 15 percent of the vote and many said they were thrilled to have won more.

In an appearance after the vote, Mr. Lamont said his showing would resonate beyond Connecticut. "Thirty-three percent is telling the people in Washington, we want change," he said.

48. Doesn't surprise me, the comments from Joementum supporters
were all "well we have to support the party even though we don't agree with his views".

Supporting a party which does not promote your views is promoting a party that is not YOURS.

Hopefully in August these people will vote their hearts.

Sam Sedar (who's furious with Liar-man) played some clips of him with Hannity. The two of them were cackling and laughing on the clip. Lieberman just sounds like a crusty old crony who needs to be swept out with the Spring Cleaning.

Even if Lieberman wins the primary, the mere fact that an intrenched Senator was forced to sweat a bit sends a warning to other conservative Democrats not to go beyond the bounds of decency in playing footsie with the GOP.

24. It is a big deal. He has gone from unknown in March to getting
33% of the delegates to vote for him in May. That is pretty impressive. Joe has had no challenger during his career as senator -- dem or repuke. For Ned to get 33% is a major victory. Ned has a very well oiled machine with lots of experience. Ned is going to force Joe to actually face the issues and discuss them -- something he has never had to do before. Joe does not bring money into our state (his only defense of his term in office) CT ranks 48th in tax dollars returned by the Feds. Because he has never had to debate these issues people here don't realize that.

The surprise in the primary will be how the cities vote -- I believe the votes for Ned in the CT cities will not be coincide with the delegate votes -- Ned will have a big lead in the cities. The Hartford delegation is tied big time to the state party, the state party supports Joe because of the money Joe brings them, therefore the Hartford delegates supported Joe.

Laugh if you want, but for the first time Joe has had to spend money on commercials before the convention. I am just happy that we Dems in CT will have a choice in August and we will have debate on the issues here.

30. Welcome to DU, Walt
The poll number you cite is for the whole population, which really isn't relevant. The more nearly equivalent comparison would be between last night's results and Bush's approval among Republicans. Bush's disapproval within his party stands at 30%. That means that Joe is less favored by Democrats within CT's party infrastructure than Bush -with all his disasters- is by Republicans.

Even that doesn't tell the whole story. While the poll reflecting disfavor with Bush was anonymous, freeing the respondants from any consequences for their opinions, the CT delegates were in the position of having to publicly confront power with theirs. Joe had plenty of money and favors to barter with. Ned had none.

Mr Short Ride has a fight on his hands.

60. Apparently you don't live in CT
The party party typically is able to shut out somewone if they want. It is a classic "insiders" game, and the town commirttee members often toe the line. So this means that the party is getting fed up with Lieberman and his he-man, women's hate stance on war and abortion, or better yet, that there is a true groundswell of opposition towards anyone who supports the Bush regime policies. If this is an indicator of that then November will be great!

79. That's 33% of CT Democratic Party insiders, not 33% of registered Dems
Friday's vote was at the state party convention so the only voters were Democratic party insiders, a group naturally disinclined to support an outsider against an establishment office holder. Lieberman has been blackmailing other elected Dems in CT by threatening to withhold campaign funding if he has to contest a primary. You might not take Lamont seriously but Joementum sure as hell does: on Friday his flunkies suddenly tried to change the convention rules to force the local Dem committees into majority - takes - all bloc voting. Democrats did away with bloc voting at the national level at the '72 convention, yet loathsome Joe tried to revive this anti - (small d) democratic strategy to protect his worthless ass.

27. Can repukes vote in the Dem primary in CT?
Only the DLC types among the Dems are going to support Lieberman. Insurance execs love him. Ordinary Dems? That pic with the chimp - kiss of death, literally. I'd advise Lamont to use it extensively.

I remember back in the early stages of the 2004 campaign when the media was touting Holy Joe as the frontrunner for the Dem nomination and we here at DU were snickering knowing his campaign was doomed from the get-go.

The fact that a third of the party establishment in CT wants Joe out is a damn good sign. I'll keep the champagne corked for now and send a check to Lamont. Retiring Lieberman would be sweet.

35. There is campaign afoot to get repukes to refuse GOP ballot and
ask for the Dem ballot. A thread about this was posted in DU about a month ago. CT Republicans love Holy Joe!

Why must Lieberman be defeated? Because it is crucial we win Congress in 2006 and put Democrats in charge of oversight committees. If Lieberman is still in the Senate, he will become a Trojan horse for the rightwing. Can you imagine Lieberman as chair of a key committee? He will prevent any investigation of abuses of power by the Bush regime, from the war to torture, Joe will protect Bush just as effectively as Bill Frist and Pat Roberts have.

37. Lieberman has accepted GOP support in the past
Shays says he intends to vote for Lieberman

February 28, 2006

STAMFORD, Conn. --Republican U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays said Tuesday that he plans to vote this year for Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman and encouraged other GOP officials to endorse the three-term senator.

Shays, R-4th District, made the remarks in an interview with the editorial board of The Advocate of Stamford, which did not immediately report his comments. The Hartford Courant reported Shay's support of Lieberman on its Web site Tuesday night. Both papers are owned by Tribune Co.

Republicans have been gauging support for the idea of a cross-endorsement of Lieberman among several GOP candidates, including Gov. M. Jodi Rell and Connecticut U.S. Reps. Rob Simmons and Nancy L. Johnson.

<snip>

Lieberman did accept an endorsement from Republicans while seeking his second term in 1994.

77. Agreed. If not for the immediate victory...
... then at least to put up a fight and get the progressive message out there, across all 50 states.

46. Connecticut has a lot to make up for between Joe and...
...the Bush family. Maybe their mutual punishment will be to spend eternity for Gee Dub to spend eternity with Lieberman's head crammed up his...er, ah...in the arrangement they have enjoyed in this life.

67. Time for Joe to call up his Cabal of Insurance, Banking, & Contractor Buds
Lieberpussy is entrenched in CT due, in part, to his corporate fatcat friends in the insurance industry. I'm sure AIPAC will be helping out, as well.

I would love to see Gore campaign for his primary rival. It would be fitting justice for Lieberman's traitorous and backstabbing ways.
