Immigration issue is dividing Republican Party

May 20, 2006

The Hispanic outcry against the House immigration reform bill caught Washington Republicans off guard, Nevada Rep. Jon Porter's chief of staff said Friday.

"I don't think anyone at the time anticipated that either side would have necessarily tried to bring this to the emotional level that it has taken," Mike Hesse said. "This is like a pressure cooker that's been building up for years."

The comment illustrates that immigration has become a divisive issue for Republicans in Nevada and nationwide, causing a rift perhaps unparalleled since anti-abortion forces won the abortion wars more than two decades ago and came to dominate the party.

This week, President Bush tried to stake out a "rational middle ground" in the immigration debate, calling for stronger border control and measures to prevent employers from hiring illegal immigrants, while also creating a guest-worker program and a path to citizenship for people in the United States illegally.

10. And it's idiotic, because the situation has not really changed much
in the last fifty years or so.

It's just letting the media pull our chains.

We need a more rational immigration law in regard to Mexico. It's our stupid laws that create the "problem." You would think NAFTA would have solved this in its what was it, 3,455,344 pages?

11. Yes its dividing rich business owners from American workers who
and falling into the poverty class because of NAFTA and globalization. I see people here hiring Mexicans instead of Americans for jobs Americans WOULD do but not for minimum wage.

7. So true! Republicans ignore immigrants at their peril.
HEre in San Diego, there are 80,000 immigrants in Duncan Hunter's district -- and boy are they mad about that bill of his to authorize building the border wall! We saw 100,000 Latinos in the streets during the immigrant marches.

Now the organizers are working to register many of those voters.

Don't forget -- even those who aren't citizens or aren't registered can still be mobilized to walk precincts, put bumper stickers on their cars or yard signs in front of their homes. I urge all Democratic candidates, clubs and progressive groups to get materials translated into Spanish and get the message out about the real differences between the parties.

This is a powerful force for change!

8. No thanks. I don't want noncitizens interfering in our elections...
... and I don't think many Americans would welcome such meddling, either.

No. I don't want us to "mobilize" foreigners into any kind of participation in our elections.

Noncitizens have no business acting as a "powerful force for change" in someone else's country.
