Ex-deputy secretary of state new figure in CIA leak probe
Ex-deputy secretary of state new figure in CIA leak probe

BY KENNETH R. BAZINET and JAMES GORDON MEEK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

May 20, 2006

WASHINGTON - Former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage has emerged as a key witness in the CIA leak probe, the Daily News has learned.

Armitage has been questioned several times, but is not expected to be indicted by the federal grand jury investigating who outed CIA spy Valerie Plame to journalists in 2003, sources said.

Armitage's testimony could hurt Vice President Cheney's indicted former chief aide Lewis (Scooter) Libby, or President Bush's political guru, Karl Rove.

Two sources familiar with the case said Armitage, Rove and Libby all had contacts with the press about Plame. Unlike Rove and Libby, Armitage appears to have tried to dissuade reporters from writing about her.

Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald recently had to sneak Armitage into a Washington courthouse to get past reporters - a sign of his value in the case, according to one source.

"Rich has been cooperating with Fitzgerald since day one," said another source, who has close ties to Armitage. "He was one of the first people to offer his testimony."

10. Yay! Rove's Flying Monkeys have returned!
I love that headline, so carefully calculated to lead the headline-only reading public to conclude that Armitage is a subject of the investigation, rather than a key witness against others.

It's a sad day when Mr. Armitage represents the more honest and honorable side of a Presdiential administration. Honest and honorable in terms of degree only, perhaps, but Armitage is clearly one of the people who refused to stoop to the chicanery of most of the rest of them.

11. More about Armitage
from Steve Clemons' http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archives/001399.php

Clemons seems to be saying that Armitage engaged in loose talk about Plame, early on and then, when he realised his error, went to Colin Powell and gave him the whole story. According to Clemons and his sources, Armitage is not likely to be indicted and is not in legal jeopardy from Fitz's investigation, but has been a cooperating witness from the start.

As others have written and reported, Richard Armitage is a major part of the story and engaged in indiscreet discussions regarding Valerie Plame Wilson and her alleged role in the Joe Wilson trip to Niger.

<snip>

Two sources have reported that Richard Armitage has testified three times before the grand jury and has completely cooperated and has been, as one source reported, "a complete straight-shooter" and "honest about his role and mistakes".

Another person with deep knowledge about this investigation called to say that Fitzgerald seems to have abandoned any interest in securing indictments regarding the "outing" of Plame and has invested his efforts in challenging the "white collar cover-ups" involved. According to this source, the information provided by Richard Armitage is -- more than any other information -- what has put Karl Rove at major risk of indictment.

I felt that these other insider perspectives are important as they are so uniformly consistent that Inman's claims are wrong, that Armitage made mistakes and immediately owned up to them, that Armitage has been completely forthcoming in the investigation, and that Karl Rove remains a prime indictment target for Patrick Fitzgerald.
