El Al quits equipping planes with new anti-missile system
By Zohar Blumentratz

A project for equipping Israeli airlines fleets with a new missile diversion and protection system has been put on freeze due to budget shortage, Haaretz learned over the weekend.

The Flight Guard Self Protection System is an airborne device that identifies and diverts shoulder-mounted missiles.

It was developed by two Israeli companies - Elta, a subsidiary of Israel Aircraft Industries - and Israeli Military Industries (Ta'as). Efforts for completing the system's development were accelerated after a failed attempt by a terrorist group to shoot down an Arkia Airlines airplane with a shoulder-mounted missile in Mombassa, Kenya four years ago.

The FGSPS is comprised of a radar detection system, an electronic interruption device and flares for missile diversion. One of the system's innovations is the use of flares that operate in the infrared section of the spectrum, and therefore do not alarm passengers when activated.

1. Cool, they can blow these ones up without using an air force plane

Sure, I'd love to fly in a plane with explosives strapped to it. And I completely trust my government, and the Israeli government, to not explode it remotely when convenient.

3. I believe he's saying...

...that, without the protection, the government could stage a false flag operation.

4. "budget shortage" ?
Well, I guess AIPAC should get started. Sounds like Israel needs another few billion worth of taxpayers cash.

5. so now you have a problem with israel defending itself
Edited on Mon May-22-06 06:10 AM by adriennui
it is so much easier to go after israel then look to the real enemies. israel is conveniently used as a lightening rod for people's hatred. it's so much easier.

6. Don't confuse disapproval with hatred...

Personally, I'm all for the security of the Israeli people, as well as that of the Palestinians. The methodology however is a different question.

7. it does seem that there are some people who will never approve of
israel's methodology. what bothers me is the double standard. egypt is not democratic and receives more aid from the US than israel does.violent repression by most arab states makes israel look like kid stuff.

if israel ceases to exist the entire world will be scratching their collective heads.....who can we hate (or as you said "disapprove")

i am not ashamed to admit that i'm pro-israel and i won't apologize for my beliefs, it's borne too much violence in the past 35 years.

8. Two wrongs will never make a right...

I have always identified with the suffering of the Jews, particularly during WWII, and I respect that Israel must protect itself; but Israel must be careful not to repeat the mistakes of its enemies.

Also, you mischaracterized my remark regarding "disapproval" by attaching it to Israel itself when I clearly and specifically referred to methodology, and not the state itself; and nowhere have I insinuated any form of hatred.

Don't be so defensive that you lose your ability to listen.

10. Thank you...

This type of deafness is what reasonable people on both sides of the aisle are up against.

The sparse population of extremists make life difficult for the fair minded majority.
