3. i agree with dora
regardless how you view a persons faith, this was a horrible thing. To pretend that they were naive or foolish and deserved having this happen to them is an insult to their memory. They were human beings that had every right to live, just as any of us do. That kind of comment is something i would expect to find on freerepublic, not here.

(I figured if this thread is going to erupt into a combined religion and gun flamewar, might as well throw capital punishment in there too)

6. You got that right
Fox news would be right proud of the ensuing flame war. Let's turn on each other instead of question why 5 poor souls killed in a church is any more newsworthy than the Pandora's box of violence the Bush administration has unleashed in Iraq.

What do we hear about that on Fox News? ....(crickets).

8. Not yet..
<snip>

""This is going to be one of the worst days in the history of our city," Police Chief Jeff Leduff said after Bell was captured and his wife's body was found at the apartment complex.

Police did not identify the dead, but church member Kenneth Green who watched and wept from a nearby building as investigators examined evidence at the church, said he was related to all of the victims.

He said his mother, Deloris McGrew, 68, his cousin Darlene Mills, 47, and his aunt and uncle, Gloria, 72, and Leonard Howard, 78, were killed. He said he also is a cousin of Bell's slain wife, whom he identified as 24-year-old Erica Bell."

<snip>

"Investigators did not know the motive for the shooting at The Ministry of Jesus Christ church.

"This is senseless. This is a total waste of human life," Leduff said."

Edited on Sun May-21-06 07:59 PM by brentspeak
Why are you using these boards to post your prejudices? I'm sure there are plenty of other websites which are more appropriate for your rantings -- and plenty of people there for you to converse with. (Note: I'm NOT referring to the OP, but to some of the responders)

11. When are Christians going to stop bashing women and LGBTs?
I suggest you read what people like Jefferson and Franklin had to say about those that wanted to impose their religion on everyone else.

13. There are those that remain silent and have allowed the fundamentalists
to hijack Christianity much in the same way that the radical Islamists have hijacked Islam, and our own brand of lunatic Jews that accused Sharon of being Hitler for withdrawing from Gaza.
Look at how the Southern Baptists, who used to be historical defenders of separation of church and state, and the Lutherans of the Missouri Synod, were purged of their rational clergy by religious extremists.

14. Yeah, the people who elected Gene Robinson bishop remained silent
and allowed the fundamentalists to run things. Sure. And those Congregationalists whose TV ads stress their acceptance of gays are no better than Jerry Falwell.

Sorry, but it's hard to take people seriously when they speak in absolutes.

Yes, some people remained silent and let the fundies take over, and other people have fought them every step of the way. Would it really be so hard for you to recognize the latter?

15. I'll be more specific, the Jesus prayer that GOP is trying to ram us with
Let's consider the following situation we have in my hometown. Other than the Indianapolis Jewish community and a handful of righteous Christians, who else has stood up to the American Taliban? What is happening here is the same thing that is happening in the military, with fundie chaplains wanting to proselytize and to pray a Jesus prayer, rather than the traditional non-denominational prayer.

Bosma appeals prayer ruling

He wants ban on religious content to be overturned

By Bill Ruthhart

A legal battle over the content of Statehouse prayer continues to escalate, as Speaker Brian C. Bosma has appealed a federal court ruling that restricts the content of prayers offered during Indiana House proceedings.

The Indianapolis Republican filed the 68-page challenge this week with the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. In November, U.S. District Judge David Hamilton ruled opening prayers in the House could not mention Jesus or endorse a particular religion.

The appeals court already has ruled against Bosma once, voting 2-1 in March to deny his request to lift the ban on prayer while the case was appealed. Bosma has vowed to take his fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.

"We are cautiously optimistic that the outstanding legal brief that's been put together will be persuasive at the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals," said Bosma, an attorney. "The Indiana district court went too far, over the line, with respect to federal case law regulating prayer."
Hamilton's decision came in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana after a minister led the House in singing "Just a Little Talk With Jesus." After the ruling, representatives who wanted to pray during the session, which ended in March, huddled in the back of the chamber before the House's opening gavel.

16. True, this is ugly, and increasingly common.
But, as you admit, there are some "righteous Christians" out there, so why tar everyone with the same brush? That's what inspires about 90% of the religious conflicts around here.

17. We need mainline denominations confronting the fundies
A few righteous Christians are always marginalized. I will also add that it doesn't help when the media relies on the most extreme fundies as spokespersons for Christianity, when in fact they only represent their own views.

18. Most of us are resisting fundy takeovers of our own.
That's what is happening in the Episcopal Church now. Bigoted domestic fundies, flush with Scaife money, are allying themselves with bigoted third-world fundies, like Peter Akinola of Nigeria, and attempting to pull entire dioceses out of the church, set up parishes under the authority of African and Asian bishops, etc.

Fundamentalism is a worldwide problem, I'm afraid, and these people have set their sights--and budgets--on the mainstream churches.

23. I can understand "on these boards"....but why on this thread?
A dreadful thing happened. Five people are dead & three children are left with a dead mother & a murderer father. This just happened to occur in a church.

What a lovely chance to hop on the "I'm an Atheist & I'm so wonderful" soapbox! I'm pretty much an Atheist, myself. But I'm not self-congratulatory about it.

"I'm not worried about guns in schools. I'm waiting for guns in church. They'll refer to him as a disgruntled worshiper."

George Carlin

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2002/08/06/MN242769.DTL

''I don't know what to say. We came here for peace, but somehow we are getting targeted for nothing," said Malhi, whose own brother died two years ago when a disgruntled worshiper opened fire at a Sikh temple in El Sobrante.

I saw another clip on the net. It starts with a snippet from one of Carlin's routines: "You know something else you'll never see on television? A slow motion shot of a man taking a runny shit while running." Cut to a close-up of frat boy's buttocks and he starts to run.

WILL PEOPLE STOP TAKING THINGS CARLIN SAYS AS SUGGESTIONS!??!?!

22. The gunman killed 4 of his wife's family members at Church.
Then he drove off with his wife & children--& killed his wife. The children are "safe."

A very sad story. Hardly an excuse for getting on a soapbox.
