Police union launches anti-Newsday campaign
May 21, 2006

Nassau County's largest police union has launched an advertising campaign on television, in print and on its Web site against what it calls the "shadow government" of Newsday's editorial board.

The Nassau Police Benevolent Association's fight with the board is tied to the union's hostile relations with Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi. The editorial writers and Suozzi have been critical of the police officers' pay and other benefits, and PBA President Gary DelaRaba has accused them of working on a shared agenda.

"He's alleging a conspiracy, as if we're actively coordinating things, which is ridiculous," Newsday editorial page editor James Klurfeld said.

"We just express our opinion," Klurfeld said. "That's what editorial writers do."

A television commercial blasting the newspaper is scheduled to start airing tomorrow on Long Island cable stations at a cost of $20,000 a week, DelaRaba said.

"They operate in total secrecy, in the shadows, unelected, answering to no one, exerting undue influence ... bending facts against the police, the very people that protect us," a narrator with a deep voice says in the commercial, a copy of which was provided to a reporter.

Langone, Spitzer Target, Raises Funds for Gubernatorial Rival

By Henry Goldman

Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) -- New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's challenger for the state's Democratic gubernatorial nomination received hundreds of thousands of dollars from people with ties to Home Depot Inc. founder Kenneth Langone, a registered Republican and target of a Spitzer lawsuit.

Langone, a defendant in Spitzer's suit over ousted New York Stock Exchange Chairman Richard Grasso's retirement pay, supports Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi for governor. Suozzi's campaign received at least $300,000 from Langone, his wife, Elaine, and two adult sons, and present and former business and charity group associates, Suozzi campaign records on the state Board of Election Web site showed.

``I've found a substantial number in the business community inside and outside New York who feel that Spitzer as governor wouldn't be friendly to business,'' Langone said in a Jan. 12 interview. Earlier that day, he had a lunch with 15 business associates, nine of whom promised to help Suozzi, Langone said.

7. Well it appears Newsday is right
and the union is wrong. The union came out strong swinging in their own defense.

5. No matter what ,"Nassau Politician" equals "Corrupt Imbecile" to
most New Yorkers. I don't think many if any upstaters (or downstaters for that matter) will favor Suozzi over Spitzer in any case. All you have to do is say what Suozzi's day job has been for the past few years.

8. Fuck the PBA...
Nassau and Suffolk cops are making incredible money and everyone tries to blame the teachers for taxes going up.

I've got nothing against cops making a fair living, it's about time they did, but enough's enough. The PBA should take their damn contract, be happy, and just shut up before the taxpayers realize just how much they're actually paying. And hope they forget about when these whining cops were bagmen for the old Republican machine.

And talking about answering to no one, working in the shadows... For Shame!
