BOSTON -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sees no inconsistency between being one of the architects of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and accepting an honorary degree from a Catholic college.
Rice will receive her degree and give the commencement address today at Boston College. This has been the source of some protests from students and faculty who believe that her role in the Iraq war contradicts Catholic teaching.
In a roundtable interview with four representatives from New England newspapers -- the Reformer, The Boston Globe, the Boston Herald and the Portland (Maine) Press-Herald -- at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Sunday afternoon, Rice said she has no qualms about the U.S. role in Iraq and that the conflict was a just one.

More than 220 members of the Boston College faculty signed a petition object to the college honoring Rice. According to their petition, "on the levels of both moral principle and practical moral judgment, Secretary Rice's approach to international affairs is in fundamental conflict with Boston College's commitment to the values of the Catholic and Jesuit traditions and is inconsistent with the humanistic values that inspire the university's work."
