Peruvian candidate Garcia escapes bullets
Two people wounded in shooting

Thursday, May 25, 2006; Posted: 8:58 p.m. EDT (00:58 GMT)

LIMA, PERU (AP) -- Two people were wounded by gunshots and another three injured by blows in a confusing incident Thursday in Cuzco as the campaign caravan of ex-President Alan Garcia was heading to the city's airport, police said.

Leaders of Garcia's Aprista party accused supporters Ollanta Humala, Garcia's left-leaning opponent in next month's presidential runoff, of attacking the caravan. Police, however, wouldn't confirm if it was an attack.

Garcia was not hurt and continued on to the airport to take a flight back to Lima.

Cuzco police chief Jairo Vazquez told reporters that the only details he could confirm were that two people had been wounded by gunshots and three others injured from blows.

He said one of the wounded said he was a Humala supporter.

6. We must remember that Garcia is a center-left candidate.
Humala is simply further to the left.
