Arizona Legislature OKs Immigration Bill
Arizona Legislature OKs Immigration Bill

Friday May 26, 2006 7:16 AM

By JACQUES BILLEAUD

Associated Press Writer

PHOENIX (AP) - The Legislature approved a bill Thursday that would criminalize
the presence of illegal immigrants in Arizona and provide $160 million to help
authorities in the nation's busiest illicit entry point with their immigration
crackdown.

The legislation also would set fines for businesses that continue to employ illegal
immigrants after receiving warnings, require local police agencies to train officers
in enforcing immigration law and deny education benefits to immigrants.

The bill, which was approved 33-22 by the House and 16-9 by the Senate, now goes
to Gov. Janet Napolitano. Spokeswoman Jeanine L'Ecuyer declined to say whether
the governor would sign it, but lawmakers on both sides of the debate predicted
a veto.

Officials from Arizona's four border counties have urged Napolitano to reject the bill.

1. The governor won't sign this.
Our far right-wing run legislature is constantly passing stupid laws knowing full well that the governor won't sign them. It's their way to show their base that they are doing something for them. They are also hoping to make all of these things issues in the next election for governor.

Fortunately the gerrymandering they have done to make sure that they own the legislative branch here does nothing to influence state-wide races. Napalitano will win her next election in a landslide. Then hopefully she'll go after McCain's senate seat.

Sounds like an excellent law to me. I hope they override the governor's veto.

3. I agree
Its what is needed. Now i may be left-leaning... but Illegal immigration is a sore spot for me.

Its illegal for a reason. I dont mind LEGAL immigration. IF you want to come into our country, do it the right way.

7. Yes, that is the position of the Republicans who introduced the
bill. It should earn them points with their racist base.

8. Baloney.
Cruel, inhumane, and unrealistic. Criminalizing undocumented workers? Good luck harvesting your fields, packing your meat, and replacing all sorts of labor associated with undocumented aliens. I agree the border must be secured. But criminalizing those ALREADY here, equating them with rapists and murderers? All for trying to make a few bucks and helping the economy. No sir.

By the way, the whole "they drive down wages" routine - the global economy and free trade is hurting the average American a lot more. Even that is not entirely a bad thing - the economy is just being restructured where manual work is being outsourced and value-added work is being added and rewarded. It may not me saying much to somebody having worked a life in manufacturing, but don't take it out on illegals, they don't make the rules. Criminalizing them is just immoral.

5. Interesting to see DUers siding with reactionary Republicans
This is a Republican initiative. You do know that, right?

I think immigration policy should be the domain of the federal government.

9. This is not a Republican v. Democratic issue
It's an American issue. Besides, Republicans support amnesty as their corporate donors profit from the endless inflow of cheap labor.
