Coleman says Hastert overreacting on FBI raid of congressman

WASHINGTON Senator Norm Coleman says he disagrees with House Speaker Dennis Hastert's call for the F-B-I to return documents taken in the raid of a congressman's office, adding that members of Congress must not be "above the law."

The Republican senator from Minnesota told reporters on a conference call that he thinks Hastert was over-reacting.

Illinois Republican Hastert and other lawmakers are upset about the F-B-I's Saturday night raid of Representative William Jefferson's office. The F-B-I was seeking evidence against the Louisiana Democrat in an investigation of whether he accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in a bribery deal.

14. Wellstone's death could NOT have been more perfect, time-wise, for
Republicans, as it happened exactly at the time which made it almost impossible for another Democrat to launch any kind of satisfactory campaign, and left only enough time for some vicious attacks on Mondale, as well as a long, drawn out attack and whine fest focused on the Democrats who attended Wellstone's funeral.

5. Really makes one wonder why Hastert's so sensitive.
Hmm, could it have anything to do with the rumors of investigations that involve Hastert? (Granted, they say Hastert's not a target, but "target" is a very specific legal term in prosecutorial circles... so denying that specific part in no way absolves Hastert of being investigated as part of an investigation into someone *else*.)

6. I think Hastert has so many skeletons in his closet, he's getting
a bit concerned that they might come to life!

15. Makes me wonder if they just want to keep the raid in the news
and if his 'twin' senator, Cornyn, comes out with a similar statement, I'll start to believe it's exactly what they're trying to do.

18. Normie is a weasel
though I probably shouldn't insult weasels that way. I suppose the skeletons in his own closet are why he's once again sticking up for Bushco, no doubt they made it clear they'd start investigating his zipper problem if he didn't.

12. 45 day seal
Why is Bush so eager seal off the documents found in Jefferson's office. All the sudden Bush is concerned about separation of powers. This smells awfully fishy. I think that Bush/Hasert/Jefferson are all connected in this scandal together OR Bush is trying to set a precedent whereby when/if Hasert's office gets raided Bush can seal the documents found from Hasert's office.

21. Or
It gives them time to negotiate and go after the main target since Hasert got scared and made a boo boo and thus drug himself into it.

Hard to say though. End result if it does have something to do with Bush expect the word, "National Security" to be used to lock it.

20. Coleman has never represented MN. He's Bush's lapdog.
He wouldn't have that seat unless Bush hadn't bought it for him (and who knows what other tricks they pulled to get Wellstone's seat).

Coleman's term is up in 08 and there is no way he will be re-elected. Even Galloway is coming to help bring him down.

22. You bet he is, it all goes back to the 2002 convention
when now Gov Tim "No-Tool" Pawlenty wanted to run for the Senate and Normy wanted to try for MN Gov again. Cheney came into town and he set things "straight". Pawlenty went into the Governor race and Normy into the Senate race. They have both been acting like wholly owned White House subsidiaries ever since then.
