ANWR drilling faces tough time in Senate
ANWR drilling faces tough time in Senate
By Mara Gordon May 26, 2006, 16:27 GMT

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- The House-approved measure to allow oil drilling in the Arctic Natural Wildlife Refuge faces near-certain death in the Senate, but has prompted debate on what opening up the protected Alaskan region means for future supplies and oil prices.

The House voted Thursday 225-201 for the bill to allow oil drilling and other forms of energy exploration in 2,000 acres of ANWR, the 12th such vote in the past 10 years. But the proposal, which would end a 26-year ban on drilling in the refuge, has little likelihood of passing the Senate where it lacks the 60 votes needed to defeat a filibuster.

Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Calif., introduced the legislation to open up energy exploration in what some say is the biggest untapped oil deposit in the country. The move comes partly because of high gasoline prices ahead of the November elections.

Pombo and 13 members of the House who support the measure said in a statement Wednesday that drilling in the area could add up to 1.5 million barrels of oil each day to the U.S. supply, helping lessen the country`s reliance on foreign oil. The bill contains an export ban, mandating that any new oil discovered in the more than 2 million acre ANWR remain in the United States.

12. He's not just Pombo's opponent, he seems to be a very decent person,
which means he has been a member of the wrong party all this time!

Here's his campaign site:

14. Maybe the Abramoff scandal will snag him, that's about the best hope...
Environmental advocates have had him in their sights for years, with no results.

2. They just won't let this die will they
I guess not when there's so much money for the oil companies to be made by selling all that oil to Asia, where it will likely go.

5. The bill has passed the senate the last 2 times.
It was usually held up in the house. They don't tell people it will be a decade before a single drop reaches market and at best would only be 2%of the countries oil needs. If we're still hooked on oil in ten years we'll all have bigger problems then where our next gallon of oil is coming from.

Pombo and the far right wingbats just want a win over the liberals.

10. Export ban?

 Ah, an export ban, eh? Why not ban all exports of domestic oil then, something they could do tomorrow instead of in 10 years?

Pombo campaign awash in cash as election nears

Published Friday, May 26, 2006

SACRAMENTO - Rep. Richard Pombo has begun an advertising blitz that could reach the half-million-dollar mark as he heads toward the June 6 primary election, an effort dwarfing that even of the constellation of environmental groups helping his main rival.

Federal campaign reports filed Thursday show that Pombo, a Tracy Republican seeking his eighth term in Congress, has amassed $1.66 million for his re-election campaign through May 17.

He still has $800,000 remaining to spend, according to the report, and more money continues to roll in daily - Monday's fund-raiser with Vice President Dick Cheney appears to have collected even more than the initial $100,000 expected.

Pombo's main opponent, former Bay Area Rep. Paul N. "Pete" McCloskey, has raised a very credible $382,817 for his effort, mostly from the Bay Area. This makes him the second-best-funded opponent Pombo has seen since he first took office in 1992.

15. Environmentalism is a platform in next elections. Expect more of this.
It can work against liberal types by having gas price soar near the election time. People will care more about the gas at the pump than environmentalism when it comes down to it. I don't know much about ANWR but I think it will be a negative for the liberal platform and cause more harm in trying to get these people out.

I think you folks need to start thinking of anything but repub/demo. As far as I can tell there is little difference between the politics of the democrats and republicans beyond using emotional ideology that divides us in this country so they can maintain power. When it comes to important things like foreign affairs, NSA and such everyone tends to tow the same line after elected because they all have large sums of $$$ and connections.
