Former Jefferson aide gets 8 years for role in bribery scheme
http://www.nola.com/newsflash/louisiana/index.ssf?/base/news-25/1148668155217730.xml&storylist=louisiana

A former aide to Rep. William Jefferson was sentenced Friday to eight years in federal prison for his role in a bribery scandal.

Brett Pfeffer, 37, is cooperating in an ongoing probe and may be eligible for a sentence reduction afterward, a prosecutor said.

-snip-

"I've gone over in my head 10 million times why I didn't look him in the eye and say no," Pfeffer said during the sentencing in federal court.

1. Does anyont still think Jefferson shouldn't step down ASAP?
Hey Jefferson. Thanks for being a corrupt asshole and shooting your party's main meme (culture of corruption) down the shitter.

3. It makes me very curious about why he hasn't been charged yet
With a case that looks this rock solid, what's the hold up?

5. I agree Rose
While the facts as they've been given to us look damning, there are some anomalies that deserve answers, such as the fact that they haven't charged him yet. Perhaps the partisan Justice Dept. is waiting until closer to the election in November to capitalize on this single Democrat Representative.

Also, why the over-zealous intrusion in his Congressional Office and violation of the Separation of Powers doctrine for the first time in history.

In the meantime, Jefferson certainly looks guilty. Of course, our system is supposed to assume innocence.

6. It still looks like Entrapment to me, and the way the Media is all over...
<http://www.lectlaw.com/def/e024.htm>

...this story, when he's not been charges or indited of anything yet, looks like the work of Karl Rove.

We spent months talking about Tom Delay, Scooter, and "the Dukeser's" upcoming indictments, but did the U.S. media give any of it this level of coverage BEFORE they were indited? No. they didn't.

I'm still waiting, this could all back-fire on the Bush Cabal and Alberto Gonzales before this is all done.

Think about it, the guy was about to go to Africa to do some business deals. A part of Africa where the banking system is almost non-existent and where you need a lot of cash to do business. And if you needed to take $100,000.00 cash on a future trip, what would you do with it? Where would you store it at home until your trip?

If they had a case, they would tell us where the other $10,000.00 was and who he gave it too.

Plus, remember who is telling you all this "...he took $100,000.00 as a bribe..!" Our current Government who have LIED about nearly EVERYTHING so far! Why are you all taking their word for this NOW? Remember, they told us Saddam had WMD's!

This reminds me TOO much of the media convicting President Clinton before any evidence was presented.

I say, wait and see.

7. I agree
Also the amount of money that changed hands is small change in reality. I think it has something to do with Jefferson being a weak link after the Katrina disaster. He is also on the House Ways and Means committee.

One of my assumptions is they want zero issues in grabbing Social Security to pay down the debt. Also another bird is they figure they can make democrats look bad. It also sends another message that if anyone on the hill gets any ideas to go against the flow right now they will get burned because they have dirt on everyone or can make it up. They can't go to the media either because all domestic information can be tracked as well. And that is the negative side of the domestic spy policy since Americans never think that innocent people trying to do the right thing would have anything to hide.

Think outside the box on how it would be perceived if you were on the inside.

Remember this?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_anthrax_attacks

If I were on the inside and I knew the political momentum I might think it was a message to join them or die. And those to ignorant to catch the message would be afraid enough to vote in legislation to protect themselves anyway. Besides the feds proved they couldn't do a damn thing and seemed to have dropped the ball totally. Why would these people who care so much about terrorism and often sacrifice themselves with bombs on their bodies take such great care to hide their identity?

I honestly don't know. I don't want to believe my government could be capable of that. But I do know that anything that comes out of the Federal Governments mouth is 95% lies. All I can do is judge them by their actions and the limited amount of information I can dig up from web sites like this who actually question the status quo.

9. Pelosi asked Jefferson to resign
I agree with her. We don't need any dirty Dems at a time when repukes will demonize the entire Democratic Congressional delegation for his actions.

12. Hamstringing Pelosi
Hasn't the Congressional Black Caucus closed ranks around Jefferson, further stripping Pelosi of her power to act in this situation? She really is between the so-called rock and the hard place.

10. the saddest word, heard
"Money" It is always moving from pocket to pocket and like "gold dust" in "49ers" pockets, some seems to just disappear! Anyone recall somewhere near 9 million into the nether in Iraq?
It does seem inevitable that there will be some democrat leaders with their hands in the wrong pockets, but they have really missed the "boat of billions" that every republican is still jumping on!
It seems that some never learned that leaving office, leaving the country, even going to jail, should be worth, in todays market, a few billion, not paltry thousands!

11. "...somewhere near 9 million into the nether in Iraq..?" I believe it was
...9 Billion, with a B! For these clowns, 9 Million is a rounding error, just like at Enron.
