Test explosion in Nevada put on indefinite hold
WASHINGTON -- Divine Strake, a massive explosives test originally planned for next month, has been put on indefinite hold.
The National Nuclear Security Administration said Friday it was postponing the test -- which entails detonation of 700 tons of explosives at the Nevada Test Site -- so it can address concerns raised that Divine Strake could spew radioactive contaminants from earlier nuclear tests into the air.
Questions about the test were raised by Nevada environmental officials, Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. Jim Matheson, and in a lawsuit that includes Utah Downwinders, who were sickened by fallout from Cold War nuclear testing.

Matheson said in a statement. "I advised him to put all the health and safety data out on the table so that people's fears about being once again exposed to radioactive contamination could be addressed. I am very pleased to see that these agencies have acted on my advice." The agency said it will determine how to best proceed after it decides how to address the questions raised by interested parties.

This is good news and I hope it stops this project from ever happening.

9. How sick. Las Vegans have to depend on Republicans to help us. Harry Reid
Edited on Fri May-26-06 06:32 PM by VegasWolf
said go for it after he talked with Bush and the gov. He said he was convinced by the government that nothing bad would happen to the citizens of Las Vegas. After listening to Harry, I think this was the exact moment that I puked on a RE-Elect Harry Reid poster sign.

13. Nevada blast put on hold indefinitely
The planned detonation of 700 tons of conventional explosives in the Nevada desert next month was postponed indefinitely Friday because of fears over the possible spread of radiation.

The detonation site for the blast, known as "Divine Strake," is at the Nevada Test Site, which is 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas

Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah, a Democrat, has long been a critic of the Pentagon's Defense Threat Reduction Agency's plans for Divine Strake.

"I was greatly concerned, and expressed as much to the director of DTRA," Matheson said. "I advised him to put all the health and safety data out on the table so that people's fears about being once again exposed to radioactive contamination could be addressed.

Finally a rational and reasonable decision. I'm in shock.

21. Yucca Mountain
There is discussion in nuclear-resistance circles in Nevada that this whole episode is a decoy, a way of deflecting attention from the nuclear waste burial site at Yucca Mt. The cross-country transportation plans for that are (arguably) more alarming than a detonation. Ya gotta wonder.

22. Or at least delay telling it about us...officially "put on hold."
That would be more likely. Don't needlessly "worry" the people...who have more important things to worry about, like the NEXT "American Idol."
