A message from the U.S. Embassy in the capital Ankara said the United States had no evidence of any immediate threat to the U.S. consulate in Istanbul but would advise Americans to put off visits to the building.
"American citizens are advised to avoid Western-oriented businesses, religious institutions, shopping centers, restaurants, bars, etc. until further information is available," added the message, on the embassy Web site.
"All American citizens are urged to continue exercising extreme caution and maintaining a low profile throughout Turkey," it said.
