Bloomberg Wants Same Sex Marriage Licenses

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- During his weekly Sunday radio address, Mayor Bloomberg announced that if the Court of Appeals does not rule in favor of the city issuing same sex marriage licenses, he will work with others in the city and state legislatures to establish a new law that establishes ‘marriage equality.’

"I believe all New Yorkers should have the right to marry whom ever they choose regardless of sexual orientation," said Bloomberg. The court of appeals is scheduled to takes up the issue of same sex marriage this week.

Bloomberg also stated that the city has worked hard over the past few years to ensure that the rights of the gay community are protected. Same sex partners of city workers receive health benefits if they're registered as domestic partners.

Bloomberg furthered argued that “I do not believe the government should be in the business of telling us who we can, and can't marry...as mayor, i have an obligation to enforce the laws of the city and the state, but I also have an equal obligation to work to change laws that I believe are not in our city's best interest

1. I dearly hope this story is carried in the small town newspapers across
the country.

Here is a Republican who is acting like a CITIZEN instead of a hate-mongering tyrant.

Ok, I was for Mark Green in the first mayoral election that put Bloomberg in office. What the hell, I'm a Democrat.

But this is the mayor in office in NYC now, and I think he's refreshing on this issue, and I hope it takes deeper hold in the national dialogue. Instead of same-sex marriage as "a controversial issue," I hope stands like Bloomberg's propel it into a discussion of "functional policy."

3. Awesome
A big thank you to Bloomberg if he follows through. This puts him to the left of our two "Democrat senators" in the state. Hillary and Schumer both oppose gay marriage.

5. What's interesting about this issue
is how the conservatives, driven by people primarily in the South, wish to nationalize the debate and PREVENT localities like Mass., NY, VT, CA etc. from making their OWN decisions on this. Essentially, they want to force THEIR bigotry on the rest of the country through constitutional mandate.

And this from the region of the country that is historically known for being pro state's rights.

Another example of how inconsistent and hypocritical righwingers are.

7. Your points there are spot-on, and your characterization of
the far right's thinking as "hypocritical" is fair, too.

There's a cruelty involved in the far right's using this issue to cast others into exile.

Exile from themselves, exile from their government, exile from other people.

Although it's dressed in legislative finery, it's not much different than witch-burning.

I'd tell you, ruggerson, that you've begun a good thread here, on an important issue, and have covered a lot of ground with it in only a few text boxes on the software, but then again, that's your usual.

Still, thumbs up to it.

It will be interesting to see if Mike Bloomberg has any national intentions with his recent public comments. He could put up an interesting debate with far-right Republicans on same-sex marriage, and a lot of other issues, too. I'd pay pretty good money to hear a debate on gay marriage between Mike Bloomberg and Jeff Sessions.

4. he is still an asshole
he did all he could to help Bush win including exploiting 9/11.

his Democratic opponents would have supported this including other liberal things he does also. but in addition they would have helped other Dem candidates win and spoke out against Bush's exploitation of 9/11 and actually done more to get these things passed.

8. NYC Mayors seem to go against their own party.
Guliani is pro-choice and in 1994, he supported Mario Cuomo over George Pataki. Is Bloomberg going to do an about face in the future and court the religious right, the way Guliani is?

9. Don't know, but maybe he won't. He is filthy rich and doesn't
need to appease anyone on the issues. If they disagree and refuse to support him, he can always sit back in the penthouse easy chair and count his millions.

It will be interesting to watch.

I have to admit, I would love the opportunity to watch the Haley Barbour Republicans respond to a Bloomberg candidacy.

11. St. Rudy of 9/11
is now the Poster Boy for the Republican Party. Let him run for National Office and watch the New York Media dig through their files and video tape for every press conference and quote Rudy has ever made regarding: pro choice, gay marriage, gun control, etc., etc. That's not even mentioning the scandals, corruption, or race relations in the City.

Of course he could pull a "I was Born Again and saw my Evil Ways", ala Junior, but will people really believe that? Again?

10. Well I guess he doesn't aspire to a future in Republican Party politics
and good thing too. He would be an electable Republican candidate for Governor in a general election.

12. Bloomberg is a life-long Dem
until he switched in 01. He still one at heart. He is one of the few Liberal Republicans left. And if he ever runs for Prez it will be as a Dem or Inde.

16. Another Rat Leaving a Sinking Ship
I smell another party switch in the offing. I don't think Mr. Bloomberg is standing on conviction here, I think he is merely engaging in political opportunism. With open arms, he welcomed gay hatred into his city in 2004.

It just sounds so obvious to me. Am I the only one? Really?
