Former chief rabbi slams gay lifestyle
Four prominent members of gay community send letter to PM requesting that he retract his support for election of former Chief Rabbi Yisrael Lau as president following criticism of Gay Pride Parade, homosexual life style

"Four prominent members of the gay community have sent a letter to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert requesting that he retract his support for the election of former Chief Rabbi Yisrael Lau as president, this after the rabbi criticized the Gay Pride Parade and homosexuality in general in a recent interview with Yedioth Ahronoth, GoGay -Israel's Gay and Lesbian portal - reported.

Lau, the current chief rabbi of Tel Aviv, said in the interview that, “As to same-sex couples –apart from the halichic problems – speaking from a national and human standpoint it pains me to see that an abnormal way of life is replacing the family unit. I am fearful from the rising violence – both among the general public and within the family unit.”

Turning his attention to the Gay Pride Parade, Lau said "I fail to understand the source of pride here. Why do they have to display their personal preferences in public?"

Officials: PM wants Rabbi Lau as president

"Senior Kadima officials and associates of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Monday that Israel's next president is set to be former Chief Rabbi Yisrael Lau.

According to the reports, a steering committee that is currently being formed will start operating in the near future in order to secure a Knesset majority for Lau's election in a July 2007 parliamentary vote."

7. Religion is the opiate of the masses, said a famous Jew named Marx.
The Chief Rabbi is an appointed position, and most Israelis could care less what the religious have to say.

4. Just a note
"Chief Rabbi" is an appointed position of Orthodox Jews.

90% of Jews in the US (and about 2/3 in Isreal) are unaffiliated or belong to the Reform / Conservative movements which have very different views.

5. Someone needs to remind the rabbi in no uncertain terms...
... That the "Jewish lifestyle" is a choice, and that there are still lots of folks who use religion to justify their anti-Semitic bigotry.

Or perhaps he would be happy to see all of the gay people rounded up into camps and exterminated?

that he can't get over bigotry and hatred! I am gay and attend a very liberal and open Conservative Temple. The Orthodox take the Old Testament literally just like the Jesus Freaks.

because of their own insecurities, these people can't handle it and thus become homophobic.

10. Lifestyle?
Edited on Sun May-28-06 07:35 PM by ismnotwasm
You mean like my cousin and her partner, proud parents of beautiful baby twin boys? Those women who work, pay taxes, live quietly and have family as the center, the very focus of their lives? The college money they are putting away, the thrift they demonstate, the kindness to community they show? That happy couple who love one another unconditionally? The couple that's been together for many years now? That lifestyle?

And here I thought it was a good thing. Guess I'll just divorce my husband, and go hang out in bars, maybe get addicted to something and ignore my children and grandchildren. Hell, there's all kinds of things I can do know I know my cousins example is a condemned lifestyle.

12. I'm trying to follow the logic; he's afraid that....
>>>>> I am fearful from the rising violence – both among the general public and within the family unit.”>>>>

...Israeli gays are a violent threat to the non-gay Israeli public? Or is it the other way around?

And 'within the family unit'; what's that mean? Gays kids are going to be violent to their parents and non-gay siblings?

Well I guess there's always room for a new canard or two but these border on the comic.

>>>> "I fail to understand the source of pride here. Why do they have to display their personal preferences in public?" >>>>>

OK, there ya go. He fails to understand. That's fer sure.

He fails to understand; he fails to understand.

A question: does the fact that he's the "*Chief* Rabbi of Tel Aviv" mean that there are rabbis in TA that aren't as smart as Lau?

17. here's the really scary bit:
“As to same-sex couples –apart from the halichic problems – speaking from a national and human standpoint it pains me to see that an abnormal way of life is replacing the family unit. I am fearful from the rising violence – both among the general public and within the family unit.”

rising violence? having acceptable families will cause violence?

it't like the perfect storm -- the vatican -- this rabbi and jerry falwell.

the violence will come from some true believing nut case who hears language like that and decides to kill a few gay people for god.

of course the leaders will blame the nut case -- and gay folk -- that way there hands stay clean and they can still call the ''faithful'' to ''action''.
