Dixie Chicks New Album, Taking The Long Way, Debuts At #1 On Billboard Top 200

Dixie Chicks Become First Female Group Ever To Have Three Albums Debut In Top Slot
On Sales Dates For Dixie Chicks "Accidents & Accusations Tour" Announced

NEW YORK, May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- As Taking The Long Way debuts at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 best-selling albums chart this week, with first week's sales of 525,829, the Dixie Chicks have become the first female group in chart history to have three albums debut at #1, breaking the record the Chicks established in 2002 when the group's last studio album, Home, debuted at #1 and made them the first female group ever to have two albums debut at #1.

With the #1 debut of Taking The Long Way, the Dixie Chicks have also become the first female group in chart history to have three studio albums occupy the #1 slot on the Top 200.

Taking The Long Way has achieved one of the year's Top 5 first week's sales tallies and has the best first week's sales for any female act on the Top 200 in 2006.

1. Hurray for those Dixie Chicks. I hope this headline is ringing in
the ears of the country-and-western station programmers who banned their music.

69. We bought our copy...
I don't usually buy much music but after reading the article in NYT about them and the trouble thay are having because the western stations(Clear Channel executives?) don't want to play their music I purchased the album the last time I was at Costco. The songs are not bad, I now have 2 Dixie Chick ablums - maybe neither will become diamond ( over 10 million copies) but at least they know some of us support them.

93. Dixie Chicks while in England, criticized george bush.
For those comments, they received death threats, had their CDs burned, were removed from country radio (where they were the #1 touring act), and were completely villified by many other country music artists. All because one of them said "I'm ashamed to say that I'm from Texas, where George Bush is from" or something like that... it was as he was pushing for the Iraq War. It was a tempest in a teapot, but the corporate powers (who are republican) that control country music radio... pulled the plug on the Dixie Chicks. Their new album is doing great, tho the jerks at country music radio stations refuse to play it!...

7. That's some good news
Thanks. I've always appreciated their talent. But this success seems to indicate that the "mainstream" public is becoming more accepting of its own dissent.

Last night I noticed how politics is entering more openly into popular culture. I would always have guessed that Kathy Griffin is a liberal, but on her new show she's pretty candid about it. Visiting wounded in Iraq, she flat out said "absolutely you can support the troops without supporting the war", and made very specifically disparaging remarks about the admin.

That's not unusual to see on late night shows, and of course not on Comedy Central. The broadness of shared dissent still has to reach up into the rest of our cultural discourse- God knows the news media won't propel dissent into CW. I see it happening.

It's a great listen. I like country but am not a fan, being more of a rock or blues fan. I do like the chicks though. I felt I was doing my patriotic duty by buying it for its stand against W and the Iraq war. BTW they are on CNN's Larry King show tonite at 9PM Eastern time.

I generally don't like coutry, but this album is very good with several songs I don't like.

I sometimes buy books from liberal writers and never read them.

I like supporting those who would demand free speech in this country.

I give away stuff if I just don't like it - which is doubly satisfying to me!! I get to support someone I like and make another happy by giving them a gift :D

84. They're a unique and eclectic mix of styles
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 09:13 AM by Zambero
Traditional country music being one of them. They are also excellent musicians and bring American folk, Celtic, pop, and rock styles into the mix. Contemporary country music sucks badly, but to their credit the Chicks have never bought into that formula. I used to dislike all forms of country music, but discovered that a lot of the old stuff from the 1930's - 1960's is quite amazing. If your dislike of country music is based on that genre's pathetic commercial output of the past 30 years, perhaps you should give this one a listen. And yes, it would help validate the artistic and personal integrity of this group. No apologies from them were ever necessary, and I'm impressed that they had the guts to take a stand while others attempted to bring them down with petty boycotts and hate campaigns. Actions that all backfired.

And while country radio has remained cool to the group in the wake of a 2003 boycott following comments group member Natalie Maines made about President Bush, "Taking the Long Way" also nabs the No. 1 spot on the Country Albums chart, bumping Rascal Flatts' "Me and My Gang" (Lyric Street/Hollywood) down to No. 2 after seven weeks at the top.

35. I'd be cynical and say it was a marketing move
all along. If I didn't know they were out there early with their criticism of Bush -- at a time when people were scared to say anything. He was still the all-powerful, you can't criticize commander in chief in those days.
And they haven't swerved from their criticism.
They've walked it like they talked it -- knowing that their original base wasn't as liberal as they are.
Rockers and rappers can get away with bashing Bush. But country? Heresy.
Now, you can bet there are music execs. all over this country figuring out how to package their muscical talent - politically.
Plus, more people will follow in the Chicks fearless lead.
The Dixie Chicks have the true spirit of American patriotism. They're doing what is best for their country. Not their government. If you don't understand the difference, you would have made a great Nazi.

91. Vince Gill did, too
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 11:26 AM by bjhecht
Vince Gill has been very outspoken defending the Chicks:

* " I have a big problem with what they did to the Dixie Chicks. You know, I don't think that their political stance should in any way have their career taken away from them. You know, that's just wrong."
* "this country is founded on free speech and, you know, right or wrong or whether you believe, agree, disagree, you know, that right is very much
apparent and people live and die and fight and die so we can have that. And to see them kind of crucified for their statements I thought was a little harsh."

39. I've liked them for a long time
but it took "The Incident" to get me to buy their CDs. I had every intention of buying them pre-boycotts, but never got around to it, after Natalie's comments and the backlash, I went out and bought the three CDs that they had released, and bought the new one last Tuesday.

47. Buy This Week If You Haven't Already
Purchase the album this week, so the sales figures are high again for the 2nd week. That's when some albums' sales drop off, so the longer the staying power of this album, the harder it will be for it to be ignored.

51. Woo hoo! Thanks for the report.
I bought their new CD the other day along with Neil Young's Living with War. Plus I purchased them through Barnes & Noble even though they cost more there than from Repuke Amazon. Go to hell neo-cons, you're getting as little of my cash as possible.

I guess I'm going to have to force myself to watch Larry King tonight if the Chicks are going to be on. Go Natalie!

53. If you want to hear 3 of the songs for FREE, here's a link...
...to an interview from last week on NPR.

The interview (and web-only interviews) are very good, but the song "Not Ready to Make Nice" is AWESOME! :applause:

I'm sure most can guess what "Not Ready to Make Nice" refers to, but they say not all are political, several of them come from personal experiences of the last few years like "Silent House," which is about lead singer Natalie Maines experience helping her Grandmother, as she slowly deteriorated with Alzheimer's Disease.

I was never a fan of the Dixie Chicks (or Country Music in general), but I am now.

<http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5424238>

The songs are in both RealAudio or Windows Media Player format, depending on which you have set as a browser preference.

65. The Dixie Chicks, From a Liberal Country Fan's Perspective
We're covering the Chicks very closely over at Liberal Country Fan (http://liberalcountryfan.blogspot.com ). We're hoping that the blog will become one of the first liberal voices in the modern country music community, and we'd love to know what you all think of our Dixie Chicks coverage!

The new album is worth the dough, by the way. While you're at it, I HIGHLY recommend "Home", their last album.

88. Some wonderful phone calls from real Americans. The kind the
world still loves and admires. Especially, the guy who compared their live phone-in with Rumsfelt's.

I wondered if the last caller was trying to wrong-foot them, asking them if they would sing to the troops in Iraq. Not that they wouldn't want to for the soldier's sakes of course. Indeed, they agreed to. If I were them, my conscience would be clear. Much as the wingnuts would like to have it, otherwise, it would clearly in no way be to condone the war.

Maybe they should suggest a mixed audience of soldiers and Iraqi guests from among the people. But I dare say it's way too late to reconcile the hearts and minds of any regular Iraqis with songs, even for a brief time. They probably be shot by their own anyway, as collaborators. Iron discipline among themselves is very important when a people are under the cosh.

81. In your face, Toby, Reba
Reba McIntyre went out of her way to dis the Chicks recently with her "foot in mouth" comment. Anybody know how her CD sales are going lately?

Also, another country artist who stood up for the Chicks is Vince Gill. After there were boos at some awards show two or three years ago, Gill admonished the crowd about pointing fingers and said something to the effect that when you point a finger at somebody, there are three fingers pointing back at you.

I'm not a huge country fan but there are country artists I like and the Chicks are in that group. I suspect there are a lot of people like me with one foot in rock and roll, a hand in folk, another hand in blues and a toe in country. Sort of like a musical game of Twister. The Chicks seem to be trying to cover all those bases as well and there is certainly plenty of precedent for that -- The Eagles come to mind.

By the way, I saw them on Larry King last night. They appear very thoughtful and articulate. It would be great if they were the real face of country and not redneck yahoos like ..... well, you know who they are.

Be Careful Of Stones That You Throw

Recorded by Hank Williams, Sr.
Written by Bonnie Dodd

CHORUS:
A tongue can accuse and carry bad news
The seeds of distrust, it can sew
But unless you've made no mistakes in your life
Be careful of stones that you throw.

A neighbor was passing my garden one time
She stopped and I knew right away
That it was gossip, not flowers, she had on her mind
And this is what I heard my neighbor say:

"That bad girl down the street, she should be run from our midst
She drinks and she talks quite a lot.
But she knows not to speak to my child or to me."
My neighbor then smiled and I thought:

CHORUS

A car speeded by and the screamin' of brakes
A sound that made my blood chill
For my neighbor's one child had been pulled from the path
And saved by a girl lying still.

The child was unhurt and my neighbor cried out:
"Oh! who was that brave girl so sweet?"
I covered the crushed, broken body and said:
"That's the bad girl who lived down the street."

CHORUS
