Terrorism invoked in ISP snooping proposal
In a radical departure from earlier statements, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has said that requiring Internet service providers to save records of their customers' online activities is necessary in the fight against terrorism, CNET News.com has learned.

Gonzales and FBI Director Robert Mueller privately met with representatives of AOL, Comcast, Google, Microsoft and Verizon last week and said that Internet providers--and perhaps search engines--must retain data for two years to aid in anti-terrorism prosecutions, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussion who spoke on condition of anonymity on Tuesday.

"We want this for terrorism," Gonzales said, according to one person familiar with the discussion.

Gonzales' earlier position had only emphasized how mandatory data retention would help thwart child exploitation.

3. Two years of logs?
How many petabytes of data would that be for somebody like Google? Is this to subsidize the storage industry or something?

5. The story changes.
yesterday, they wanted to logs because of "child pornography".

When the story changes once a day, you can bet someone is lying through their teeth. Historically, that would be this maladministration.

My theory is that they want to be able to track dissidents and political opponents. As far as I am concerned, it's the only explanation that makes any sense, considering the scale.

They want to know what you, me and everyone else is thinking.

6. Root Password

Want to know the root password to the Constitution?

"child porn"

"terrorism" is a recently discovered back door that grants root privileges.

9. And suppose someone is doing a legit research project
on child exploitation...Or someone is looking for online help to determine whether a child is being abused. Will these people be harassed?

Can the Justice Dept's privacy be infringed on as well?
How about the pretzeldent's?

10. They're screwed ...

I got a small taste of this at work awhile back.

I was helping a customer configure their system to block porn sites. (Not that this is entirely possible, but I'm supposed to try to help.) Got an e-mail a couple months later describing the results of an IT audit of Internet usage. Seems I had entered "questionable" search terms and was having my activity monitored. I got the e-mail after the end of the monitoring period, of course, and they'd just thought they'd inform me they found no further infractions, but warned me not to use those terms again.

I can't visit DU at work anymore for similar reasons. This thread, for example, would raise all kinds of alarms.

Although I think fear is the first choice. These power-mad imbeciles get off on it.

Well, he is being honest. He does want it to continue his and his cabal's continued terrorism against us all.
