Jury toils over Abu Ghraib verdict
FORT MEADE, United States (AFP) - A US military jury haggled over the fate of an army dog handler accused of abusing Iraqi prisoners during a torrid period at Abu Ghraib prison which tarnished America's image.

A panel of four officers and three enlisted soldiers must decide whether to convict military police sergeant Santos Cardona, 32, of making his dog bite, scare and threaten prisoners at the notorious jail in 2003 and 2004.

Deliberations hit the 14-hour mark Thursday, after the panel was handed the case late Tuesday at the vast Fort Meade military base outside Washington.
