Islamists claim Mogadishu victory

An Islamist militia says it has seized Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, after weeks of fighting against an alliance of warlords supported by the US.

The warlords have controlled the capital since they toppled Somalia's last effective government 15 years ago.

"The Joint Islamic Courts are not interested in a continuation of hostilities and will fully implement peace and security after the change has been made by the victory of the people with the support of Allah," he said.

"This is a new era for Mogadishu," he told AFP news agency.

Warlords

The violence began earlier this year when a group of warlords, who had divided Mogadishu into fiefdoms, united to form the Anti-Terrorism Alliance to tackle the Islamic Courts, who they accused of sheltering foreign al-Qaeda militants.
The Islamic Courts deny this. They were originally set up in Mogadishu by businessmen to establish some law and order in a city without any judicial system.
The Islamic Courts has long said the warlords in the Anti-Terror Alliance were being backed by the US.

Washington merely says it will support those trying to stop people it considers terrorists setting up in Somalia but stresses its commitment to the country's transitional government, which functions from Baidoa, 250km (155 miles) north-west of the capital.
The Anti-Terrorism Alliance includes eight warlords, four of whom are ministers in the government, which only controls a small part of the country.
President Abdullahi Yusuf had urged the US to channel its campaign against Somalia's Islamists through his government, rather than the warlords and came under heavy pressure from some MPs to sack the warlords because of the fighting in Mogadishu.

It is interesting to note that these warlords that the USA was supporting are the same warlords responsible for the deaths of American soldiers and that the Islamic Courts were set up to counter the lawlessness of these warlords.

1. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter
We used to call many of the folks who became Al-Qaeda freedom fighters because they were killing Red Army soldiers in Afghanistan. Now, they've killed Americans. They're the same people, but the labels have changed.

2. And yet it's not as though it was as clear and
simple as your snip would imply.

"Their stated goal is to restore a system of Sharia law in the city. Last month in Mogadishu a teenager stabbed his father's killer to death before a large crowd, after a death sentence was passed.

"The head of the BBC's Somali service described the rise of the Islamic Courts group as a popular uprising....

"Analysts say it is not entirely certain where the Islamic Courts militia has obtained its substantial weaponry and financing - some fingers have pointed towards Saudi Arabia, others to wealthy foreign supporters of Islamic militancy."

Sa'udi Arabia has had praise for this initiative. After all, it extends the theocracy. Da'wah and agitation for implementation of shari'a in an Islamic state have been led by 'businessmen', even if the 'businessmen' have been the head of Islamist NGOs fully in the employ of the Sa'udi government.

"Popular uprising" is a weasel term, and oddly used here. Does it mean that people independently clamored for it, is it possible that after several years of being told that Allah requires the faithful to join the shari'a judges' private milita to impose the shari'a courts' rule the people finally fell into line with the required 'popular uprising', or does the person mean that it's a 'rising up that enjoys popularity'.

3. See this is one problem with open US support...
As i said in a recent thread about this, it's only a good idea if your side wins. If the Islamists win a battle, like for the capitol here, it becomes a victory against the United States by proxy, and that's not a good thing at all.
