G.O.P. to Run an Ad for Bush on Terror Issue. (amazingly awful read)
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/21/politics/campaigns/21REPU.html?hp

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 — After months of sustained attacks against President Bush in Democratic primary debates and commercials, the Republican Party is responding this week with its first advertisement of the presidential race, portraying Mr. Bush as fighting terrorism while his potential challengers try to undermine him with their sniping.

The new commercial gives the first hint of the themes Mr. Bush's campaign is likely to press in its early days. It shows Mr. Bush, during the last State of the Union address, warning of continued threats to the nation: "Our war against terror is a contest of will, in which perseverance is power," he says after the screen flashes the words, "Some are now attacking the president for attacking the terrorists."

By indirectly invoking the Sept. 11 attacks, the commercial plays to what White House officials have long contended is Mr. Bush's biggest political advantage: his initial handling of the aftermath of the attacks.

running, ducking and hiding is a masterful handling of the "aftermath of the attacks" is your cup of tea, then I guess the bunny in the monkey suit is your kind of precedent. Granted, when they sounded the all clear, Crooksader Wabbit came out of the bunker - and pointed his six-shooter where Unca Dickie said "Aim! Real target be damned!".

The Rethugs really think this is gonna give 'em some traction? Good thing they have so much $$ to waste while they try to figure out how to get the hump in the office and the lump in *his bed another fours years free rent.

edited because it (*) scans better that way.
:)

5. Hey, I can see the voter response to THAT little campaign spiel.
If they keep spewing that crap while things keep getting worse in Iraq, all they're going to do is piss off the voters. Nobody is interested in hearing about what a great terrorism fighter Bush is when the whole Iraq operation is going straight down the toilet.

6. His initial handling of the aftermath of the attacks
That's what I'd like to see in the ad...shots superimposed over a map of Air Force One fleeing drunkenly from hovel to desert wasteland to barren swamp, with Bush eventually cowering in NORAD headquarters under Cheyenne Mountain...

8. One way to counter this
The DNC should counter with its own attack ad. Something along these lines:

FADE IN

Video clip of Bush boasting, "Bring 'em on!"

Freeze on Bush's smug face and pull in

Voice-over: "President Bush thinks defending America means fighting the wrong wars. Wars that cost America friends in a time of danger. Wars that put America's safety at greater risk..."

Cut to: montage of photos depicting slain US soldiers in Iraq, amputees in bed, and Iraqi citizens dancing on burned-out Humvee

Voice-over: "He was warned about Iraq. And what did he say?

Shock cut to: grainy photo of Americans running in terror on September 11

Bush's voice, repeating: "Bring 'em on!" "Bring 'em on!"

Voice over: "Isn't it time for real national security?"

FADE OUT
