MUSAYYIB, Iraq - Air Force Staff Sgt. Justin Cremer listened carefully as Army Capt. Irvin Oliver described the upcoming mission. They'd raid a compound of houses the next morning; a map was sketched on the ground in chalk lines of yellow, blue and white.

Oliver looked at the soldiers bunched around him and reminded them that aerial photographs had showed at least 17 people in the compound the night before, and that they were looking for just one - an insurgent cell leader suspected of orchestrating roadside bombs that'd killed American soldiers.

Be careful, Oliver told his men, not to get shot. And be careful, the company commander said, not to shoot any unarmed civilians.

Despite those warnings, last Thursday's mission would serve as a reminder that counterinsurgency is among the most complex forms of warfare, and sometimes the wrong people are killed.

...

'They (the jets) look for anything suspicious, but everything's suspicious around here,' said Lott, 25, of Clarkesville, Tenn. 'It's a big game of hide and seek. You're fighting people where you can't tell who's who. You can't tell the good guys from the bad guys in Iraq.'

the death of loved ones. If somebody invaded your country and dropped a 500 lb. bomb on your home (accidentally or intentionally) or gunned down your whole family (accidentally or intentionally), would you even think about seeking revenge? How many people do you know would seek revenge if they lost family members in an occupation?

I thought 2,000,000 dead Vietnamese taught everyone the answer already, but I guess the leaders of today were too damn busy dodging the fucking draft and plotting world domination when they were back in college that they didn't pay attention.

9. no win situation
I agree the Troops are being placed in a situation that no matter what they do they are screwed. Believe they are catching heat for the actions (unexcuseable)of a few. Those responsible will face justice.

10. This is what my great uncle has said about Iraq.
In Iraq, they are fighting foes dressed in ordinary civilian clothing. My great uncle who served in Europe in WW2 said that there was no problem telling who was your enemy, they were dressed in gray, or all black if they were SS.

Anytime you have enemies in ordinary garb, you're gonna have problems discerning who's friend and who's foe. Lots of unfortunate accidents have happened to innocent people there.

14. Well, here's a clue for the troops...............
Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice are NOT your friends. They're the evil ones who are sending you over there to do their bidding so they and their oil buddies can tally up their millions while the underclass loses their lives and limbs.

When you realize that that's the naked truth, then maybe you'll wise up and rise up against these self-serving jackasses.
