MD Governor Ehrlich: "gay marriage is an oxymoron"
snip> "Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich spoke out today on the issue of gay marriage.

Ehrlich told WBAL-Radio today that quote "gay marriage is an oxymoron and makes no sense."

Adding, gay marriages, quote."will *not* be the public policy of the state of Maryland as long as I'm here."

He says marriage is the bedrock foundation of society and -quote- "I'm not going to contribute to the denigration of that bedrock." <snip

one more sentence here: http://www.wmdt.com/news/index.htm

notes*
"Today" means Nov 20.

I think his horrible hair hat is contributing to the denigration of our society.

5. If Hetero marriage is so much "Bedrock"...
Why doesn't the good Governor issue an executive order requireing everyone to be married? That's the ticket, get rid of the cats and vibrator and get a husband /get rid of the motorcycle and sailboat and get a wife or go to jail? Get a divorce, the State will fine you then pair you up from a pool or you go to jail...

So, he won't allow it as long as he has any say about it?

When is he up for re-election?

6. I think 2006
he was elected last year (I didn't vote for him, his opponent had made a lot of enemies), we still have mostly Democratic representatives in Washington, though.

26. Here's hoping!
I get giddy just thinking about an O'Malley vs. Ehrlich race. Then we can kick the GOP back down to permanent minority party in Maryland for good.

Or so I can hope

10. It Is Repeating Itself. Santorum, etc. Are Talking Publicly About Not
granting some americans rights that other americans have. He is talking openly about changing the constitution to RESTRICT rights for a certain group of people in this land of the free. Amendments have been added to the constitution to ADD rights, never to take them away from a particular group.

Keep talking GOP idiots.. you're digging your own grave. Every word you say to oppose equal rights for all WILL be used against you!

14. i have a better idea...
why not just create a new, broadly written amendment which says:

"all people are created equal, but some are more equal than others"

then whoever is in charge can just take away the rights of whoever they don't like! brilliant!

7. This is what happens when we
attach religious significance to legal contracts. Okay, then, next time I have to borrow money from someone in my community, I expect to get it interest free just like the bible says I should.

9. And like the Bible says
the wealthy have to forgive what is owed them by their peasant debtors every 7 years, wipe the slate clean and let them start over again debt-free!

Now THAT's the ticket.

12. The term "Republican Friend" is certainly an oxymoron then.
Bu$h`s stolen election. Proved that some Americans want to be treated more equal than others. Even though they are short at the polling places by over half a million voters. Only the oxymoron GOP party and their sheep would buy that crock of crap. Unless of course we scare the public with self created terrorism and needless war. Sounds like a blueprint for the GOP itself.

Edited on Fri Nov-21-03 09:21 AM by cosmicdot
if he wants to turn up the heat, the people should do the same ...

He should be supporting the Constitutional rights of all Americans and Marylanders.

I guess Ehrlich has received his marching orders from Rove.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend should be Governor. That "election" (I use quotes because one can't be sure if they are or not) was in 2002.

22. I wish! But tell that to some DUers here...
... who defended Ehrlich and crossed party lines to vote for him and not Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. There were enough of them here all right, and I got frustrated debating them over what Ehrlich really stood for. Well, to them I can only say, "Thank you for your votes -- NOT!"

20. He's right! Gay marriage will destroy the sacred institution of...
...holy matrimony!!

God intended marriage only for Fox reality shows and in Elvis-impersonating Vegas chapels!!

Besides, gays should only be allowed to have anonymous sex... in bathhouses and behind bushes!!

28. I can remember quite well the day after the election results came out
Everyone at my school was depressed. We were all supporting Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and it was just like a mass depression. People were saying things like "We're ruined!" And this is at a high school. Things have just gotten worse for him. I don't know anyone who likes him. He won't be re-elected.

Hey, whatever happened to those allegations that some Ehrlich people had gone to churches and told African Americans something about not voting? I can't remember it exactly, but I'm curious how that turned out. Was it true?

29. Not exactly true
Ehrlich won nearly every county in Maryland. Only Montgomery, PG and Baltimore City vote for KKT. The demographic shift occuring in Maryland indicates growth in all those more suburban or rural areas, not in the areas that backed KKT.

30. If you look at the results closely
you'll see that Ehrlich, even winning all of those counties, got about 51.5% of the vote, about a four percent difference to KKT's 47.6%. Montgomery, Prince George's, and Baltimore City are hardly small areas, they're three of the biggest. You can't really do it by county, but by actual votes as Maryland has 23 counties plus Balt. City with very small counties like Garrett, Kent, and Somerset. KKT lost by 66,170 votes with nearly 1.7 million voting.

31. I don't disagree
But it is a clear trend. Not only have they mounted strong challenges in a couple recent gubernatorial elections, but they won this one.

In general, population growth in Maryland is in the suburbs and exurbs, not the areas where we are as strong. That means it is trending their way.

Yes, KKT was lame and O'Malley is cool, but Duncan might roil things enough on our side to keep us divided Baltimore vs. D.C.

32. That's true about population
And Duncan has always been one to look out for himself and no one else.

But Ehrlich is trying to play it safe by not doing any big things. The last I heard about was the slots and University of Maryland rates going up to get rid of that deficit. I don't know how things are in rural areas, and how hyped Ehrlich's comments about gay marriage will be, but I've always seen MD as being very respectful toward homosexuals. It won't help him, but it certainly could hurt. I guess we'll see in the future how Ehrlich does. He's no Connie Morella, that's for sure.
