U.S. General Says Bin Laden 'Out of the Picture'
BAGRAM, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A senior U.S. general said on Friday that al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) had "taken himself out of the picture" and that his capture was not essential to winning the "war on terror."

General Peter Pace, vice chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at U.S. military headquarters just north of Kabul that the 11,500-strong U.S.-led force hunting al Qaeda and Taliban militants was not focusing on individuals.

"He (bin Laden) has taken himself out of the picture," Pace told reporters after visiting U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan (news - web sites).

2. Oh what a great way to mask failure
I wonder how long it will be before they claim Saddam is out of the picture and not important too.

Kim Jong apparently isn't a threat.

Gee, who will be left in the picture?

My bets are Syria. Syria!! Evil evil Syria!

6. was thinking the same thing
I mean, does this imply that the "criminal" is the one who decides if he is guilty or not?

"taken himself out of the picture" implies that bin Laden is running the investigation

is he then "the boss"?

does the US answer to bin Laden?

what a crock of steaming shit

He and his closest operatives had a big dinner at Tony Roma's to mark the occasion, where they presented him with a gold watch and told many jokes of which he was the butt. A good time was had by one and all.

8. why isn't the Chimp or Rumsfeld making these statements
is this acceptable protocal ... for him to be making such statements re OBL?

General Peter Pace is the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In this capacity, he is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Nation's second highest ranking military officer. General Pace is the sixth officer to hold the position and the first Marine. As the Vice Chairman, General Pace serves as the Chairman of the Joint Requirements Oversight Council, Vice Chairman of the Defense Acquisition Board, and as a member of the National Security Council Deputies Committee and the Nuclear Weapons Council. 9. WTF?????
I suppose this is ChimpCo's way of saying they are never going to find OBL, so that months and years from now they can defend their failure by saying they weren't trying to find him in the first place.

I wish mainstream America would listen and understand the gravity of remarks like this...

But most megalomaniacs find that very difficult.

At any rate, OBL and Hussein are, just by breathing, inspiring others to continue their war. I would like to see them captured and put on trial in the Hague. Perhaps that would lead to * going to the Netherlands, as well.

Or, maybe not...Pineapple Face (Noriega) is still in jail (in the U.S., however) and ain't talking.

15. In other words, "We can't find him."
Let's see now, what's your record so far on finding things that pose an imminent threat to the civilized world:

1) bin Laden - 0%
2) Saddam Hussein - 0%
3) WMD's - 0%

Nice job fellas.

24. There are two schools of thought on that
You and I both know perfectly well that WMD's were never there, but everyone I know who still desperately clings to the fiction that the war was justified are not only convinced that the WMD's are there somewhere, but that Osama bin Laden is "probably dead," so they would say only two of those things exist too.

It's funny how a guy who orchestrated an attack on the United States so deadly that it took out two entire zip codes is now someone who the right wing are completely content with just assuming he's not around any more. I guess "Wanted: Dead or Alive" should now be replaced with "Eh... so what? 3000 dead? Big deal..."

matter even if he does magically "catch" 2 weeks before election day.. AWOL can't use Osama in his favor any more. There have been more terror attacks around the world since the chimp started his fake war than when President Clinton was in office. AWOL has NOT made the world a safer place. He has single handidly INSTIGATED violence world wide. He is sooooo gone in '04!

belongs on a Democratic ad, to counter Chimps new Republican reelection ad, depicting him as leading the fight against terrorism. I mean, obviously we can't believe a thing the man says. We at DU have always know it, maybe some of the slumbering citizens can stay awake long enough to think about why he never ends up delivering what he promises.

23. He probably was watching Letterman last night
Clark was talking about the bait & switch that Chimpy has pulled re: the war against terror changing its focus from OBL and his cronies to the highly desired, long sought after war in Iraq. Dave asked General Clark if he would have caught OBL by now, and Clark answered YES. Perhaps Pace is feeling a little threatened by that?

29. That's what I was thinking too
That this was a response to Clarke's dig last night on Letterman.

Do these insane idiots really think that OBL "taking himself out of the picture" = retirement? I don't think so. He's off the radar for now so he can stir up more trouble without the glare of world attention. And we're helping him do that. Sheesh.

What better way to cover up your failure than to say it doesn't matter... really..... it doesn't....... matter.

32. Many many Generals are speaking out these days...
....they all sound a lot like Rummy. One general sez we don't need anymore troops. Another sez since the air strikes things have been rather quiet....another perdicted that Saddam would be captured in 60 days last July. The top general said a few days ago that attack of WMD on the United States of American would be the end of the constitution. And an General Powell said on February 5th of this year that He had proof that Iraq had WMD.

General Pace sez bin Laden has taken himself out of the picture. Huh? How does Pace know?

Geeneerals are full of caca.

38. Clark effect
Numbers against the truth. The flaw here is that very few if any of them are adept speakers in the defense of the indefensible. It will only build Clark up if this strategy backfires and it is because the results are plain.
