US Military Dismisses Iraq Attacks
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=540&e=1&u=/ap/20031121/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

<snip>
BAGHDAD, Iraq - More than a dozen rockets fired from donkey carts slammed into Iraq (news - web sites)'s Oil Ministry and two hotels Friday — attacks dismissed by a U.S. general as "militarily insignificant" but which also exposed weaknesses in gathering intelligence on insurgents.

The brazen, coordinated strikes at some of Baghdad's most heavily protected civilian sites defied a U.S. crackdown.

Two other donkeys — one pulling a rocket launcher and another rigged to a bomb — were found within hours, one 30 yards from the Italian Embassy. U.S. officials said the targets were the headquarters of a Kurdish political party and a law school.

A civilian contractor was seriously injured at the Palestine Hotel, where many foreign journalists and U.S. workers are staying. No other casualties were reported at the Palestine or at the Sheraton Hotel across the street, and police said no one was hurt at the ministry.

1. Of Course They'll Dismiss The Attacks.
They wouldn't want to admit that operation "I'm An Idiot", which has been going on for the past week, is a dismal failure.

3. It was simply one jackass to another, consider the source. Bad thing
is that is seems whenever the Coalition starts speaking cocking in the press, BAMM, our guys get hit pretty hard.
Really wish they would just STFU. Won't let the press get out any of the real story, don't bother giving them the one-sided view.
Put Jacko back on.:eyes:

And all this time we thought it was referring to the planes.

6. None of this has to be "militarily significant". . .
Edited on Fri Nov-21-03 12:26 PM by Journeyman
it is enough to be "politically significant" to make all the statement necessary to be made.

Edit: typo

7. Failure to plan is a plan to fail...
I bet the attack didn't feel so "militarily insignificant" to that one civilian contractor who got his a*s blown off.

I guess Operation Iron Hammer (which, you might of heard, was also the code-name for the Nazis' attempt to destory the Soviet power grid), isn't sophisticated enough to deal with donkey-based weapons.

Vietnamization, anybody?

8. Haven't learned a thing.
God help us if we get in a real war.

Biu Tin:

He is probably best known for his role in the fall of Saigon when, as a People?s
Army colonel, he accepted the surrender of Saigon?s presidential palace. It was
Tin who countered Col. Harry Summers' observation that Hanoi had never
defeated American troops in the field with the simple rejoinder, "This may be so,
but it is also irrelevant."

To the guy who was carried out of the Palestine Hotel on a stretcher. Just don't do it after he regains consciousness, however...

Gad--these nincompoops sound more like Gen. Westmoreland every day.

11. Let's hope the US doesn't start missle attacks on Donkey carts.
I remember Israel doing this once. Wasn't there a "suicide donkey" strapped with explosives once too?

12. At Valverde in 1862
A Union officer named Paddy Graydon fitted out some mules with explosives and led them towards the Confederate camp the night before the battle. Unfortunately the mules did not understand their mission and wanted to follow him back to the US camp. The results of this experiment seem to be lost to history.

17. Interesting, but I was thinking more recently. PETA was up in arms on
this one. I remember reading it in the local paper.

Just found the link to it:

Israel did take one out with a missle in August.

13. Strictly speaking
I suppose you could say the 9-11 attacks on the WTC were 'militarily' insignificant.

18. This was a Brig General Kimmit referring to attacks
as being militarily insignicant. Pretty dumb thing to say. Pretty dumb also that he said that we don't have the best intelligence in the world, but it is getting better. Nothing like letting the enemy know your weaknesses.
