ACLU to fight Cuba travel ban

Florida's American Civil Liberties Union plans to file a lawsuit today to challenge a new state law that bans colleges from organizing and paying for trips to Cuba and other countries that may support terrorism.

''It's not in the overall interest of the United States for individual states to meddle in matters of foreign affairs and international security,'' ACLU spokesman Brandon Hensler said Monday.

-

Professors from Florida International University and the University of Florida will speak about why they believe the Travel to Terrorist States Act is unconstitutional and how it could hamper education in Florida.

-

''The ACLU has hit a new low by filing a lawsuit that will aid terrorist countries,'' {State Rep. David} Rivera said.

Fidel Castro is THE political platform for Florida politicians. Not education, not health care, not skyrocketing insurance costs, not affordable housing, not election/black box voting reform. Nope.. its all about Castro this and Castro that.

1. Yeah, but it won't last forever...
The Cuban community is changing, with each generation less and less rabidly anti-Castro than the last. Most of the younger Cuban-Americans these days care more about visiting relatives in Cuba and sending them aid than they care about bringing down Castro. As more and more Cubans adopt that view as the older generation of right-wing, hardcore anti-Castro Cubans dies out, Florida politics will change.

2. Not only older Cuban-Americans.
Check out some of the DU Cuba threads. There you'll see a whole gaggle of Cubaphobe "experts" grinding their anti Cuba axes.. and this is a "progressive" liberal web forum.

I agree with you about the younger generation of Cuban-Americans, but the standoff with Cuba nets large amounts of political campaign money - for both pro and anti sanctions supporters, for both Rs and Ds. The embargo/travel sanctions status quo is politically expedient in the current political campaign fundraising environment. We need tax funded campaign funding.

3. Completely agree about tax-funded campaigns...
the hell with Cuba. It's only one tiny problem that would be solved if we got the money out of political campaigns.

7. Ummmm ... Yes.
Are you trying to suggest that new immigrants to this country should immediately assimilate within a generation?

Don't you think that's asking a little much?

5. I'm not a huge Castro fan, but I don't think the embargo does any good
The only people that the embargo with Cuba benefits is Florida politicians of both parties.

The best way to speed up the end of Castro's reign is to have free trade and tourism. Once people get a taste of freedom and middle class comforts, they will want the whole deal.

9. How many terrorist acts has Cuba committed?
What standard are they using to call Cuba a terrorist nation?

10. I strongly oppose the embargo...
but couldn't they have waited until AFTER November to file this? The way some of these issues are falling in line prior to the elections makes me want to reach for the tin foil.
