Jonathan Brandis, who from an early age appeared in a string of roles on television, commercials and film, including the starring role in 1991's "The Neverending Story 2: The Next Chapter" and two seasons on Steven Spielberg's "SeaQuest DSV," has died. He was 27.

(Death actually occurred on the 12th, but I didn't see the story until today...)

while he did die earlier, most did not pick up on it until now it seems. for some time people were debating whether he actually died.so i think this should stay on late breaking news since the NEWS of his death is pretty recent.

the day after there were about TEN attempts by DU members to post the news in LBN and EVERY TIME the thread was locked and the subject was relegated to The LOUNGE.

I won't forget that.

All respect to Jonathan Brandis (an actor and a decent chap I met a few times when I lived in L.A. and worked in The Biz). Sorry he's dead, but I'm really only posting here to stick up for TheBlob, who seems to have been (IMHO) self-righteously dissed by someone else here because he hasn't contributed enough MONEY. Did I get this right? Hey, I'm new to DU---just a week or so, and I'm still learning the ropes and all, but someone dissing someone else, or telling them they shouldn't complain about a DU policy because they haven't paid enough money? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? Wow, go work for Bill Clinton and line up million-dollar corporarte speeches and take your 5%. How dare you tell another perosn that he can't speak his mind because he hasn't given enough MONEY. My God, this is awful. And if this is what DU is all about, I'm gone.

IMHO, if the founders of DU wanted to make this an exclusive club, they could have made it subscription only. Instead they exercised the time-honored American principle of allowing free speech.

What is it that bothers you about that?

I admit I was a bit put off by that. It had me questioning whether I had a right to be here at all if I didn't have a Star.
But I'm not gonna be bullied or guilted into donating when I can't afford to, especially when I've donated to Democratic Underground in other ways.

I've been promoting DU since I found it. I've been posting the website address in message boards of all kinds. I've turned on close to two dozen friends and co-workers to DU (and a few of those have since donated as well). At the start of the "war" I went so far as to buy a box of 200 2X4 florescent green stickers, and with a magic marker wrote:

"Don't trust the networks.
Look for the truth.
DemocraticUnderground.com"

I then put these stickers all over subway stations and telephone booths in New York City.

I think I've done more for DU than if I had skipped a meal to send in five or ten bucks.

Although I'm sure I'll be attacked (or dismissed) because of my low number of posts. I tend to read DU for information and not as a way to feel self-important like many. Don't let the heavy-posting elitists silence you.

This is not a country club. It's a place for discussing ideas. Let's keep money out of it whenever possible.

....day #1.....or damn near....before skinner or elad started asking for donations and stars were being handed out...when there were a few hundred subscribers.....god bless these owners...they have kept this a site everyone can post on...no pop ups, just free speech...

thank goodness to the person who gave me a star, because i can not afford even the slightest variation from my shoestring salary...i didn't ask for the star either...i ask that any donation be made to my non profit employer or the ronald mcdonald house, but i have it and i thank my benefactor nonetheless......

how dare anyone give someone without a star a line of bullshit...get off of your fucking pedestal...i have seen a lot of others voice up without the donation thing being an issue, and i have seen many with stars tombstoned...this was a gripe over a mods decision, not about the site itself.

I've found that different and new mods sometimes do things a bit differently than previous mods....

Not worth getting upset about...or maybe it is...whatever....really too bad about Brandis.....my son's age (almost)...just such a waste....I think of all the young ( and not so young) soldiers dying and it all just seems like such a waste, yuo know??

I read the book but didn't see the movie.

Now, about that star...I invented the DU star,* and it greeves me greatly to see us all tearing ourselves apart over it, fighting like cats and dogs over a yellow, five pointed scrap of cyber-space... some people lording their stars over the other members...

I have sometimes thought that, since I suggested the star for DU donors, that I deserved some additional recognition, that I should get a bigger star, or perhaps two stars by my name...but (like the inventor of the smily face, and Laura Bush) I never complained. I just kept smiling.

Indeed, until this day, I just sat quietly, basking in the reflected glory of my single star...never suspecting that my star "concept" would be bandied about disparagingly and dragged thru the gutter...oh the humanity...oh God can anyone imagine the weight of the responsibility of...ah, just a minute, I lost my train of thought...
