Governor: Pass bond or raise taxes (Arnie rejects reductions in social pro
Schwarzenegger rejects reductions in social programs

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said for the first time Thursday that Republican lawmakers and California voters would have to approve his still- incomplete "fiscal recovery'' plan or face higher taxes because he is unwilling to cut deeply into social programs.

The plan to issue a $15 billion bond to erase part of the state's debt has run into opposition from some lawmakers, including conservatives in Schwarzenegger's own party. In an interview with KFBK radio in Sacramento, the governor said his proposal is the only alternative to higher taxes.

"Well, I mean, you know, the Republicans have a choice. It is the fiscal recovery bond or raising taxes. That is the choice that is up to them, because I am only going to make cuts to a certain point,'' Schwarzenegger said.

"I'm not going to cut dog food for blind people,'' he added, referring to state assistance for seeing-eye dogs. "It won't happen. I'm not going to take prosthetics from people with disabilities and all that stuff. There is a certain point where I stop."

3. Gasp! A REAL Republican would feed the dogs rat poison
and impose a confiscatory tax on prosthetics. Oh, and then blame the dogs and the disabled people.

6. how will Chairman George
...make his "great leap forward" if local/regional officials keep deviating from party orthodoxy like this? Re-education camp time for Arnie after a couple more unauthorized outbursts like this!

7. repeal Prop. 13
Howard Jarvis is dead. There should be a more equatable approach to property tax than the present two-tiered system (those who bought homes pre-1978 vs. those who bought homes after 1978). It shouldn't be that difficult since I imagine many of those home owners who voted their pocket books in 1978 should be dead or moved on to other states by now. I wonder if there are more "post 1977" homebuyers now than in 1978 who see Prop. 13 as unfair?

18. I agree on that
residential property is one thing, but if you have valuble commercial property you are probably making money off it. Does not deserve to be exempted.

9. I blame the voters

What the hell kind of rabbit did you think this doofus was going to pull out of a frickin' hat? We are broke and our tax base is eroded. I was no fan of Davis, but no intelligent person thought that there was some barrel full of pork in the back room that Davis was keeping safe for his cronies.
We got nothin'.
So now the big plan is to put our kids though a broken, underfunded education system and then stick them with the bill for our "irrational exuberance" when they graduate.
No doubt there will be another democrat in office by then trying to fix things that can fill the role of scapegoat.

11. Extremely interesting
The bond issue is a bad idea, period. One can cut spending so far before the kids are going to school in buildings with leaky roofs (they already are) and roads have the texture of a lunar landscape. That leaves raising taxes.

Okay, GOP. You didn't want to hear it from one of ours, now you can hear it from one of your own.

When does Ted Costa take a recall petition out on Arnold?

"I'm going to audit everything." The voters were so ready to think there was magic in the Arnie mystique. This is going to be fun.
