WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States toned down its position on Friday on referring Iran's nuclear programs to the U.N. Security Council, and a State Department official said Washington might not insist on that point in negotiations at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.

"I'm not sure, frankly, that referring it to the Security Council is something we are insisting on," said the official, who asked not be identified.
"It's being reported that, if you don't get it sent to the United Nations, that we failed to persuade people. ... It presumes that we are pushing to get (it) referred to the United Nations, which I don't think we are doing,' he added.

State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said on Thursday the United States wanted the IAEA board to declare Iran in violation of its international obligations and report it to the Security Council, which has the power to impose sanc
