Bush acknowledges Guantanamo damages US image

WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush acknowledged on Wednesday that the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where three detainees committed suicide, has damaged the U.S. image abroad and said it should be shut down.

But he said a plan for relocating the prisoners was needed first and added he was also awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court about the forum for handling cases of some detainees.

"I'd like to close Guantanamo, but I also recognize that we're holding some people there that are darn dangerous and that we better have a plan to deal with them in our courts," Bush told a news conference in the White House Rose Garden.

...

"No question, Guantanamo sends, you know, a signal to some of our friends -- provides an excuse, for example, to say, 'The United States is not upholding the values that they're trying encourage other countries to adhere to,'" Bush said.

his own image and that of the Republican leadership and he's only concerned with their image here in America because Americans are a threat to their power.

3. Well obviously the Chimp couldn't shine three suicides on...
the sooner the Bush War Criminals can sweep this under the rug the better--so thinks the Chimp.

Meanwhile, Rummy bans all media from GITMO. Kinda telling isn't it?

Across the pond things aren't so rosey either:

UK named rendition 'crime partner'

Wednesday June 14, 2006 1:13 AM

The British Government has been labelled a "partner in crime" for its role in secret flights organised by the United States to transport terrorist suspects.

It has been accused of adopting a "see no evil, hear no evil" approach to so-called rendition flights set up by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

A report published by Amnesty International claimed the Government, as well as several other European states, had broken international and domestic law. It called for an independent inquiry into rendition flights and for all European governments to publicly reject the practice.

The 46-page paper was published a week after Europe's human rights watchdog, the Council of Europe, named Britain as one of 14 European countries which colluded in the flights.

A seven-month inquiry found that the CIA ran a "global spider's web" of covert flights to take suspects to secret prisons all over the world for interrogation. It is feared that many suspects were tortured after being taken to countries with poor human rights records.

6. Uh, because we're NOT "upholding the values that they're trying encourage"
Other people aren't using that as an excuse to say it. It HAS to be said.
