Woodcock wins in GOP gubernatorial race (ME)
AUGUSTA, Maine — Chandler Woodcock defeated Peter Mills in Maine´s Republican gubernatorial primary, but the state senator from Farmington held off from declaring a victory as Mills awaited final reassurance from late tallies still trickling in from some towns.

"We´re being respectful of the process Peter is going through now," said Woodcock campaign manager Chris Jackson. But Jackson said it´s "extremely unlikely" Mills could make up a nearly 2,000-vote difference and pass Woodcock.

Gov. John Baldacci, meanwhile, won the Democratic Party´s nod to seek a second, four-year term this November after defeating Internet service provider Christopher Miller by a 3-1 margin.

In the GOP race, Mills refused to concede to Woodcock on Wednesday morning as incomplete tallies did not reveal a clear winner. Mills, who was seeking tallies from precincts that had not reported and where he sensed support, said, "My mission this morning is to prove to myself I can´t win here."

Woodcock is a very - repeat VERY - consevative Republican. This is the best outcome our incumbent Governor could have hoped for. Woodcock supporters haven't figured that out yet. I am cautiously optimistic now of re-electing our Democratic Governor.

2. Chandler Woodcock? Seriously?
That has got to be the silliest name I've heard in politics in a long time.

If he loses to Baldacci, will he challenge the man to a duel or something?

The name just gives me an image of a stuffy Victorian aristocrat. The only thing that would make it better is if he had a "III" or a "IV" after that name.

8. I read the results in the Press Herald online and an image came to me:
pasty faced middle age WASP with tortoise shell glasses and a bow tie. Not far off, based on the photo.

I'm thinking Chandler Woodcock would have been a good name for a character inSalem's Lot.
:P

7. This is excellent news
I notice people are chortling at the name "Chandler Woodcock", but if you aren't a Mainer, you probably don't know that the man fits right into the image the name conjures.

Peter Mills would have been tough to beat, especially with former Dem Barbaba Merrill running a vanity campaign as an independent. Woodcock is the weakest choice the Republicans could have made.

15. I agree, Woodcock is a good political name in Maine, not a bad one.
It has the word 'wood' in it! I can almost see the foresters lining up to vote for him. Plus he has the Maine look about him, like Stephen King almost.
