Faux News: Documents Support Saddam-Taliban Connection

Documents Support Saddam-Taliban Connection

Did Saddam Hussein's inner circle and the Taliban rulers in Afghanistan actively court each other in hopes of forging an anti-American alliance in the region?

Ray Robison, a former member of the CIA-directed Iraq Survey Group (ISG), examined efforts by Saddam Hussein to build and hide weapons of mass destruction, and supervised a group of linguists to analyze, archive and exploit documents and materials of Saddam's regime.

In this second of a three-part examination of a newly-released document captured in Iraq, Robison offers further evidence that in 1999 the Taliban welcomed "Islamic relations with Iraq" to mediate among the Taliban, the Northern Alliance and Russia, and that the Taliban reciprocated with an invitation to Iraqi officials to visit Afghanistan.

The document appears to be a notebook kept by an Iraqi Intelligence Service (IIS) agent, and apparently captured in 2003. The translation is provided by Robison's associate, known here as “Sammi.” The notebook deals extensively with the meetings between a prominent Taliban supporter and former Saddam regime officials.

1. blah blah blah
I can point out several reasons why this theory is suspect, but hey, nobody listens anyway, so what's the point?

2. Our own government had more connections to the Taliban than Iraq did
:eyes:

"Islamic relations with Iraq"? With Saddam, who Bin Laden called "an apostate, an infidel and a traitor to Islam"?

Right.

3. I believe this is what is called...
re-writing history. I expect more "documents" to be dribbling out very soon suggesting a connection between Saddam and 9/11. Whatever.

4. Newly released document, captured in Iraq...
Ink still damp and names of participants don't fit time-frame they were in saddam's government...
Who wants to bet this is a Pentagon or White House Iraq Group attempt at a "niger document forgery"?

10. The story doesn't match the headline
The only "link" with Hussein is that one of his IIS agents made notations about "former Saddam regime officials" (probably disgruntled) meeting with a "prominent Taliban supporter." They certainly weren't part of "Hussein's inner circle" at the time.

Since the Taliban and Hussein had nothing but hatred for each other, this wouldn't be unusual. And "Islamic relations with Iraq" is probably an idiomatic Arabic way of saying "overthrow Hussein and install a theocratic Islamic government in Iraq."

Now, of course, we know that bush accomplished this for the Taliban.

The part that reveals this for neocon propaganda is the casual use of the phrase, "examined efforts by Saddam Hussein to build and hide weapons of mass destruction." There were no such efforts by the time we invaded, of course. But the phrase implies that there was simply because the neocon ISG was seeking to find them. (Remember how they said, "the fact we can't find any WMD is proof that he has them and is hiding them?")

The kicker is, "supervised a group of linguists to analyze, archive and exploit documents and materials of Saddam's regime." This story is one example of how they are "exploiting" (misrepresenting) them for bush's political benefit.

11. So what? No one ever claimed we were invading Iraq because of
its relations with the Taliban. If relations with the Taliban were the basis for war, why didn't we invade Pakistan?

I seem to recall docs being "found" in some hotel room shortly after the fall of Baghdad; those same docs were found to be false.

16. The fix is in...this is election time stuff
Bush is giving a speech daily; Bush and Cheney are telling the American people that Republicans will win despite the fact that the polls heavily favor democrats; Saddam--9/11 connection must be found so that the invasion was not illegal; Zarqawi--the creation of the Neo-cons--was killed and a new enemy (complete with framed photo) who has replaced him, will be killed as it gets closer to elections; the media is in full propoganda mode; Diebold has their backs.

The fix is in.
