Breaking....House passes vote in support of continued Iraq presence
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 10:29 AM by AnOhioan
A controversial House resolution on Iraq passed today 256-153 after a rancorous election-year debate. The nonbinding Republican measure labels the Iraq war part of a global fight on terrorism and says an "arbitrary date for the withdrawal or redeployment" of troops is not in the national interest.

12. no names yet but.............
In fact, 42 Democrats broke ranks and joined with all but three Republicans to support the resolution. Two Republicans and three Democrats declined to take a position by voting present.

13. Thats it
Instead of working on real issues. Our BS government shovels more shit. This resolution was designed with one purpose in mind, to make the Democrats look like they don't support the troops. The sad part is that it will probably work come election time.

24. The war in Iraq isn't a real issue?
It seem to be the most important issue to many DUers.

26. The resolution did not offer any proposals
except "Bush has done the right thing and we will prevail in Iraq and stay to the end."

THAT was the repubs proposal. Very helpful, thank you.

voted yesterday to table it.

27. But all the headlines read the Senate voted not to withdraw
The GOP knew that would happen, so did the Dems. Heck, the GOP fed the headline to the corporate media. So now in the people's minds almost the entire Senate wants to stay in Iraq with only a few holdouts.

9. To quote the honorable John Murtha: "This isn't about the war on terror,
this is about the war in Iraq." (Paraphrased)

I think this is a good distinction to make. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. No weapons of mass destruction. No big problems with terrorism before we arrived on the scene.

Bush I and Rumsfeld were largely responsible for putting Saddam in power over in Iraq in the first place, so it would seem to me they created the mess to start with.

21. There is no "Global War on Terror"; there is, however, a "Global
War for Empire." Iraq is a battlefield in the Global War for Empire which the U.S., btw, is losing. I think of Iraq as *'s Stalingrad.

14. Nancy said it good
"Stay the course, I don't think so Mr. President. It's time to face the facts."

"The war in Iraq has been a mistake. I say, a grotesque mistake."

Go Nancy!

20. How is it that democrats keep getting in these catch 22's
Damned if they voted for it (even the dems recognize the Puke agenda is superior), damned if they didn't (Hate Murka/Love Turriss). This cycle of crap has got to stop. Hopefully in November the dems can gain enough seats and power to quash some of this garbage.

However, I am sure the reaction will be carefully edited and sanitized for MSM consumers as democrats whining about mean old Pukes, and the dems who said "screw this" will be demonized, while the dems who voted for it will be portrayed as good little boys and girls who know that the RW is "right." This cycle of defeatism has got to stop or it will go on until there is no United States. There might be a core lead by bloodthirsty fundamentalists, but the rest will be under the effective/de facto suzerainty of China, the EU and other nations and blocs that hold our loans.

22. Because the Republicans get to frame the debate
and don't allow for amendments to be even voted on.

The smart thing to do would have been to not have voted.

The whole thing is such BS that it is amazing. There was no need for this other than pure political BS.

If all the Democrats voted nay the GOP wouldn't have had a leg to stand on and wouldn't keep doing this.

Jeez. Where's my reacharound?
