Iraqi Sunni group wants finance minister on trial

BAGHDAD, June 16 (Reuters) - An Iraqi Sunni group renewed accusations on Friday that Shi'ite Finance Minister Bayan Jabor condoned death squads and prisoner torture while he was interior minister, and demanded he be tried by an international court.

Jabor, a member of the powerful SCIRI Islamist party, served as interior minister during the previous, transitional government and was accused by Sunni leaders of sanctioning militias targeting minority Sunnis.

...

"There is no escape from referring him to an international court," said the Muslim Scholars Association, a Sunni group fiercely critical of the U.S.-sponsored political process.

"Giving him another portfolio and keeping his assistants in their position means that the new government is partner to the crimes," the group said in a statement.

1. Hey Scholars, notice your Basra head got whacked today?
Maybe someone's sending you a subtle message you shouldn't oppose death squads so much.

(And this is sort of sarcastic, I'm far from a pro death squad guy but, this is my way of introducing context.)

2. I love ritual insult -- at least as a spectator sport.
That one's sort of a grand slam for dishing out negative face, not only to the guy involved, but to the government, and by implication, SCIRI.

BTW, has anybody checked out SCIRI's page--assuming it's the right SCIRI, not not a fake-front SCIRI. What's the black thing superimposed on the outline of Iraq, anyway?
