Shoe Bomber Kills 10 Inside Iraq Mosque
A shoe bomber blew himself up inside an important Shiite mosque during Friday prayers, killing at least 10 people and wounding 20.

The imam of the Buratha mosque in northern Baghdad, a leading politician and deputy with the governing Shiite coalition who often spoke out against the late terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, blamed al-Qaida in Iraq for the attack.

"They were targeting me for the second time and the prayers also," said the imam, Jalal Eddin al-Sagheer, in an interview with The Associated Press.

1. BBC coverage of the bombing ... more good news
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5086326.stm

The latest bombing took place shortly before weekly prayers were due to begin, during which Mr Saghir was due to deliver a sermon.

The imam, who is also a leading Shia member of parliament, said he believed he was the target of the attack, but added: "This will not deter us, this will not affect the political process."

He said the bombing looked like it was revenge for the killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the former leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

2. Anyone got any ideas on how they know he was a 'shoe bomber'?
Was he wearing something like these, only they were ticking?

3. But, but, I thought their crackdown was successful and had
curtailed the violence.

Bastards, one and all, violence begets violence, hate fosters hate.

4. Wouldn't that be "sock bomber"?
Since when do you get into a mosque in Baghdad with shoes on your feet?

5. That's a good point!
On the CNN radio newsbreak on my local AAR channel, they just reported this story, but said the guy had an explosives belt.

I think the 'shoe bomber' part was probably added for propaganda effect.

6. I'm suspicious of the details also
The Shiites and Sunnis have been locked in a struggle since the day Mohammed died (like 800 years). Saddam barely kept the lid on sectarian violence in Iraq and now it is full blown.

Al-Qaida is a fundamentalist Sunni sect (wahhabi) so the attacker being Sunni (attacking Shiites) fits. What looks questionable is the comments by the bombed Imam. His comments fit the GOP party line on 1) Al-Qaida being the source of unrest in Iraq, and 2) Zarqawi being really important.

I'm just leery of the whole angle that says "Al-Qaida ("insurgents") followed us to Iraq and they are behind all of the violence there." In the present vacuum of power, the Shiites and Sunnis would be be going at it regardless of our presence or Al-Qaida's.

9. A shoe bomb can kill ten people?
But two 500 pound bombs took an hour to finish of Zarqawi? Bombs are strange things, I guess. Fortunately I haven't had any personal experience.
