Secret homeland security hotline gets telemarketing calls

WASHINGTON - For a governor with a secret hot line to the Department of Homeland Security, the only thing worse than hearing that phone ring, is answering the call and hearing:

"Hello! Are you satisfied with your long-distance service provider?"

"Every time that phone rings, it's telemarketers," grumped Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner, whose secret homeland defense hot line sits in her office, ringing occasionally with offers of time-share condominiums and great deals on long distance. advertisement

"I wonder about the security of that line," said Minner, noting that other governors have reported similarly unwelcome intrusions on the high-tech video phones that are supposed to ring only in the event of a national catastrophe.

Minner, who sits on a homeland security advisory panel of the National Governors Association, mentioned the annoying phone calls while visiting Washington on Thursday.

3. Unbelievable!!!!!
Every time the phone rings, a heart stops!!!
Eventually, ya figure, hell, it's just a telemarketer, when half your state is ablaze!!

Ya gotta ask yourself, why didn't they do this IN THE FIRST PLACE?

The problem, Minner said, seems to be the random-number call generators that telemarketers use. Telemarketers have been lucking onto hot line numbers almost as long as they have been installed in governors' offices. In 2003, Wisconsin media reported that a telemarketer rattled Gov. Jim Doyle by ringing the crisis line just as U.S. troops were launching their first full day of ground combat in Iraq.

So what's a governor to do?

The same thing any other American can do when bedeviled by telemarketers.

According to Minner's office, the Department of Homeland Security has placed all the hot line numbers on the federal government's Do Not Call Registry, that's supposed to ward off telemarketers.

Or they could have just given everyone a call zapper!!!!!!

5. Unfortunately with the DNC list...
Pollsters and other non- and not-for-profit groups are exempt from having to reference the list, and any company you have done business with in the last year is also exempt. I have been registered from the first day I could be, and I still get countless calls from tele-beggars and survey-takers and the like.

6. That's one of my favorite MST3K-style jokes I like to use...
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 12:58 PM by IanDB1
I insert stuff like this all the time into movies and TV shows MST3K-style:

Jack Bauer is on a rooftop, with a sniper rifle, about to take-out a terrorist. His cellphone rings. Jack answers the phone--
I insert, "No, I am very happy with my long-distance carrier..."

Or:

The President and The Joint Chiefs are in the NORAD bunker. The screen is lit-up. And then the Red Phone rings. The President answers, and I insert...

"I do not want to change my long-distance service."

Also funny: "I thought I told you to stop calling me at work? I love you too..."

or:

"Right now? A black, tactical SWAT jacket, helmet and a Kevlar vest. What are you wearing?"

Caption: "I'm really not interested in switching to satellite television right now-- No, not you, Mister President. I've got a call on the other phone."

New caption: "Hey, that phonecard I found worked! I called this chick, and she's like TOTALLY hot!"
