‘Pop And Drop’ Bombs the New Threat in Iraq: General

Iraqi insurgents are using new “pop and drop” bombs that are quickly set down in the path of U.S. or Iraqi forces, a U.S. commander said June 16.
Maj. Gen. James Thurman, commander of multinational forces in the Baghdad area, said U.S. forces have been effective in spotting and countering the new improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

”We refer to those as pop-and-drop IEDs, and they’re not effective,” he told reporters here in a video conference from Iraq.

”It’s where they put down some form of an explosive very quickly, thrown out of a car, that’s thrown out there, and we encounter it,” he said.
”But I will tell you, they have to be pretty quick, because we’re going to catch them most of the time,” he said.

Shouldn't they be calling them "DROP and pop"?

Let's get the hell out of Iraq, NOW!

3. The DoD has been using something similar
but orders of magnitude more expensive in the form of scatter munitions, both AP and AT. If you scatter enough of them, you are bound to get somebody, usually some poor civilian.

5. Could this be a budget "area denial weapon" in evolution?
Because if 500 people dropped ten of those things roughly at once, that would certainly slow things down in a big chunk of a city. That's just what some of those anti personnel bomblets are supposed to do: make an area too dangerous to go through for a set period of time.

The only thing positive I see about this is that it might indicate that the insurgents are finally beginning to run low on supplies of 105 and 155mm artillery shells. Failure to secure those stocks at the outset of the war cost us very dearly.

Willy Peter's effect may take years to show even if the burns are immediate. Elemental Phosphorus is very toxic and dissolves in fatty tissues. The Central Nervous System can sustain permanent damage from high levels of Phosphorus.

Once it burns, the resulting Oxide is harmless. P2O5, the resulting Oxide is hydrated to Phosphoric Acid, a common ingredient in fertilizers and soft drinks.

Large particles of burning Phosphorus tend to bury themselves under the skin as they burn through the flesh. Once the source of Oxygen is removed, the remaining particles of elemental Phosphorus begin to slowly dissolve into the surrounding tissues.

4. Why are they telling us this?
That's always the first question that pops into my mind, so to speak. If the tactic is ineffective, why let the enemy know that?

14. I thought the same thing...
I used to believe these stories were simply "news worthy"-type stories. Now, with the Corporate Media so anxious to accommodate the Bushistas, I wonder why this story appears.

Could it be that this tactic is having a profound effect on occupation forces, and somehow trying to downplay its effectiveness is necessary to offset criticism?

8. Why does anybody develop new methods?
Survival of the fittest.

You adapt in response to a perceived need. They perceive a need. Imagine scenarios in which they could need a new bomb-delivery method, not hard. I can come up with a bunch, but I don't know if they're likely or not.
