US vets given preference for federal jobs

WASHINGTON, June 16 (UPI) -- U.S. military personnel who have served in the post-Sept. 11, 2001 period now qualify for preference in hiring for federal jobs.

U.S. federal agencies were informed recently of the change, GovExec.com reported Thursday.

The Office of Personnel Management issued a regulation June 9 giving hiring preference to anyone who served on active duty for at least 180 days, any part of which was between Sept. 11, 2001 and whenever Operation Iraqi Freedom ends, either by presidential proclamation or law. Military personnel need not have spent time in Iraq or Afghanistan to qualify, GovExec.com said.

The last period designated for veterans' preference was the Gulf War -- specifically for military members who served between Aug. 2, 1990, and Jan. 2, 1992. Without this designation, the rules are much stricter for military members to benefit from veterans' preference, and can require 24 months in service, permanent positions and a campaign badge.

1. There was always a veteren's preferance when it came to a lot
of Civil Service and USPS jobs. I ran into it more than once as a number of points automatically afforded vets on pre employment tests.

Since women are more likely to die in childbirth than men are in war, I've always wondered why the same number of points were never afforded to women who faced death bringing the next generation of citizens into the world.

The service of our vets should be and is recognized. I've just wondered why it is so one sided.

6. Nothing new....
I am a Marine Corps Veteran that served from 1983-1983 (Woman Veteran, by the way), and we were afforded preferential treatement back then when I applied for the post office. I worked for the USPS for four years directly after my time in service and I believe I was give an additional 10 points for being an Honorably discharged Veteran.

I think the Republicans are trying to give the impression that they are doing a good deed, when in fact they're simply rehashing an old policy.

7. Too little too late
Finally something that shows respect for vets' service, but it's too little too late. Throw out the elephants turds in November anyway.

9. This is nothing new.
It's not only an old practice, but I believe it's a good practice.
