CNN Breaking: Grand Jury Decides Not to Indict Rep. Cynthia McKinney
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 04:31 PM by VolcanoJen
Breaking on CNN now... will update with link when it emerges.

ON EDIT: Link (thanks to LiberalHeart!):

No Charges Against Rep. McKinney in Scuffle With Capitol Police

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A grand jury declined to indict Rep. Cynthia McKinney on Friday in connection with an incident in which she admitted hitting a police officer who tried to stop her from entering a House office building.

The grand jury had been considering the case since shortly after the March 29 incident.

The confrontation led to much discussion on Capitol Hill about race and the conduct of lawmakers and the officers who protect them.

1. Gee, what a big surprise.
It sounded like a tempest in a teapot at the time. Now the howler monkeys on the right will once again take up the cry of "special treatment" while ignoring their own.

There was NO REASON for Cheney to lift his shotgun to the height of another mans face! But then again he's uber-rich, male, white and extremely powerful.

against this war ---early on, when she was almost standing alone.

I would call her BOLD, COURAGEOUS,A TRUTH SPEAKER ...

That I'm sure totally exonerated Rep. McKinney.... 'cause you know if it showed her hitting the cop, it would have been broadcast on the side of the Washington Monument or something.

Good for her. Shame on the Black Caucus for not supporting her.

For not publicly supporting Rep. McKinney after this debacle. They know how she has been targeted over and over by The Powers That Be. THey should have showed solidarity with her on this. I was absolutely gobsmacked when they didn't. They have stood together on so very many things. McKInney deserved a public show of said solidarity.

34. She didn't - only the spin says she did admit

"I was rushing to my meeting when a white police officer yelled to me. He approached me, bodyblocked me, physically touching me. I used my arm to get him off of me. I told him not to touch me several times. He asked for my ID and I showed it to him. He then let me go and I proceeded to my meeting and I assume that the Police Officer resumed his duties. I have counseled with the Sergeant-at-Arms and Acting Assistant Chief Thompson several times before and counseled with them again on today's incident. I offered also to counsel with the offending police officer."

33. So much for indicting that ham sandwich
By not indicting McKinney, this grand jury makes clear they don't serve to simply rubber stamp the prosecution. That ham sandwich breathes a little easier, but freepers scramble to come up with another excuse to dismiss the indictments of Tom Delay and Scooter Libby.

35. I'm sure her 'apology' and 180 on the racial profiling helped her.
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 09:29 AM by aikoaiko
For what its worth -- I think she probably made contact she shouldn't have, she became overly defensice and blamed others for her actions, and then under pressure from her colleagues apologized without admiting any real wrongdoing. I'm glad her actions weren't criminalized, I'm glad she apologized, and I'm glad this won't be a distraction anymore.

Her 'apology'

REP. MCKINNEY: Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I come before this body to personally express again my sincere regret about the encounter with the capitol hill police. I appreciate my colleagues who are standing with me, who love this institution, and who love this country. There should not have been any physical contact in this incident. I have always supported law enforcement and will be voting for H.R. 756, Expressing my gratitude and appreciation to the professionalism and dedication of the men and women of the U.S. Capitol police. I am sorry that this misunderstanding happened at all and I regret its escalation and I apologize. Thank you, mr. Speaker.

Expressing the gratitude and appreciation of the House of Representatives to the professionalism and dedication of the United States Capitol Police. (Introduced in House)

HRES 756 IH

109th CONGRESS

2d Session

H. RES. 756

Expressing the gratitude and appreciation of the House of Representatives to the professionalism and dedication of the United States Capitol Police .

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

April 4, 2006

Mr. MARIO DIAZ-BALART of Florida (for himself, Mr. MCHENRY, Mr. MILLER of Florida, Mr. LINCOLN DIAZ-BALART of Florida, and Mrs. MILLER of Michigan) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on House Administration

RESOLUTION

Expressing the gratitude and appreciation of the House of Representatives to the professionalism and dedication of the United States Capitol Police .

Whereas the United States Capitol Police force consists of over 1,500 officers who are dedicated to the protection and security of the Capitol Complex and its employees and visitors;

Whereas the United States Capitol Police continually sacrifice to provide safety and security to the Members, staff, and nearly 3 million visitors each year to the Capitol Complex;

Whereas while the United States Capitol Police endure physical and verbal assaults in some extreme cases, the officers continue to provide courteous, responsible, and diligent services in an unbiased and nonpartisan manner;

Whereas the United States Capitol Police face many threats to their safety and must remain constantly alert for suspicious actions or for failure to respond to requests and instructions;

Whereas the United States Capitol Police , as the first line of the defense of the Capitol , has shared in the ultimate sacrifice in law enforcement;

Whereas the United States Capitol Police are on the front lines of the War on Terrorism and remain on constant alert against unauthorized access to Capitol buildings, terrorism, and other threats to the Capitol Complex;

Whereas Capitol Police officers stationed throughout the Capitol Complex act in a professional manner and treat Members, staff, and visitors with dignity and respect;

Whereas the United States Capitol Police consistently apply security and safety measures to all, including Members of Congress; and

Whereas the United States Capitol Police is one of the best trained, most highly respected law enforcement agencies in the United States: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives--

(1) expresses its gratitude and appreciation for the professional manner in which the United States Capitol Police carry out their diverse missions;

(2) expresses appreciation for the dedication United States Capitol Police officers have for protecting the Capitol Complex; and

(3) commends the United States Capitol Police for their continued courage and professionalism in protecting the Capitol Complex and its employees and visitors.

40. And under her breath, whatever else she had to say
was probably more than justified. The Capitol Hill police are bottom-of-the-pork-barrel, republican-appointed goons, by and large. The Head Goon, the chief, retired just recently, but he got his start in Chicago, at the Democratic Convention in 1968, busting up and beating down on anybody whose hair was too long. He learned nothing new in all the years since. None of them like McKinney, and it's ridiculous to assume this episode was even about a 'misunderstanding'.

Cynthis McKinney is one of my favorites, for fighting back and reclaiming her seat, after they pulled one dirty trick after another on her.

she is damn right there shouldn't have been any touching, It was a crime against the constitution for Mckenna to touch or otherwise impede the people's representative, I'm glad the GJ could see that, and I hope they recommend that he be brough up on charges of violating the constitution and failing to uphold the Capitol police's mission statement of protecting the people's representative

43. Thank the Lord! She never did anything but defend her Constitutionally
protected right to enter Congress UNIMPEDED BY ANY PERSON FOR ANY REASON AT ANY TIME!

So many DUers--likely many trolls and Freepers in disguise, but not all--piling on her, here at DU--it was sickening! CYNTHIA MCKINNEY IS ONE OF THE FINEST MEMBERS OF CONGRESS EVER TO GRACE ITS HALLS! SHE IS A PATRIOT AND TRUTHTELLER AND A GENUINE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PEOPLE--ONE OF THE FEW! COUNT THEM ON ONE HAND!!!!--and the bad guys were after her! God, WHEN are we going to learn to defend our own from the moment crap like this starts to happen? WHEN????!!!!

As for Rove, I posted at DU a month ago that an indictment of Rove for perjury would be a defeat for Fitzgerald. It would mean they had totally blockaded his investigation. Fitzgerald didn't/doesn't want a second perjury trial. He wants to crack the higher level conspiracy to destroy Plame and the WMD counter-proliferation network she headed, which had to have been the work of Cheney or Rumsfeld or both. Rove couldn't have done that--he is just a political operative. That's my read on Fitzgerald from both his statements and his "body language"--and the gist of his filed papers. And Rove avoiding indictment for perjury points to FITZGERALD winning the behind the scenes pressure game and getting Rove to cooperate. (Fitzgerald had him on perjury, from what I could see.) It's certainly possible that Rove just muscled his way out of it--maybe using Bush Cartel toady AG Gonzales in some kind of behind-the-scenes "Saturday Night Massacre." Possible. But not likely. Such a thing may have been attempted, but since Fitz has the goods on Gonzales, too--on obstruction--I don't think they could or did get away with it. Rove is now going to have to testfy under oath at Libby's trial. That's probably why there is now, suddenly, talk of a Libby pardon. The issue is what did Rove disclose, or agree to testify about, that convinced Fitz to make a deal with him for the greater good of his case? If a Libby pardon happens, I think we'll see Fitzgerald issue a report that will just blow these people away for the many crimes they have committed connected to the Plame/Brewster-Jennings outings. Politically, it would have been great to see the Rove frog march, and to have his evil presence removed from American politics. But I don't think it would have been the best thing in the long run. But we'll see. It's like reading entrails. A lot of unknowns.
