Enron boss wants verdict quashed
21 June 2006

Former Enron boss Jeffrey Skilling is asking a judge to overturn last month's court verdict that found him guilty of fraud and conspiracy at the firm.

In a motion filed with the US District Court in Houston, Skilling claims that the evidence presented at the trial was "legally insufficient".

If the verdict will not be overturned, Skilling said he wants a retrial.

Along with Enron founder Kenneth Lay, Skilling was convicted of hiding Enron's debts before its 2001 collapse.

2. It's a delaying tactic
Skilling and Lay know damn well they're going to get a presidential pardon before Bush leaves office, they're just stalling until Bush can give "Kenny Boy" and friends their pardons

5. Pardons could come as early as Spring next year
after the elections and 2 years before the next. Since 1994, the GOP does their dirty work during off election years then the next year they act innocent.

4. They will undoubtedly take this to the Dancing Supremes,
Where their old buddies will call it unconstitutional and allow the criminals to go free.

7. Wise judge?
I only hope the judge sees through this guy and makes him take his lumps accordingly. In my mind if the Judge does release the 60 million then he is helping Skilling dupe the shareholders and retirees.

8. Hey Jeff
I got a speeding ticket back in '78, could you talk to the judge about that one also? Thanks, BR.

9. Routine procedural move
Gotta go through all the hoops for your client, even when the motion is pointless. Gives the appellate attorney a little more time to write the appellate brief, and makes one more section for the assignments of error recitation.

Can we please toss Mr. Skilling in the clink pending the outcome of his appeals, like we would with any other common criminal?

11. there is no law
preventing them from asking, in fact it is entirely within their rights to do so. You don't want to give any procedural reason to allow for an overturned verdict on appeal...so let them ask

(and something in the back of my head says that is a standard motion after just about any criminal conviction that doesn't involve being caught on video tape or someother extremely damning evidence)

12. Legally insufficient for a member of the ruling class
He's pissed that he's being judged on legal standards that apply to the little people. Sorta like Leona Helmsley.
