VA to Offer Free Credit Monitoring to Vets
WASHINGTON (AP) - Veterans whose personal information was stolen from a Veterans Affairs employee's home last month will receive free credit monitoring from the government to protect against identity theft, the government said Wednesday.

Names, Social Security numbers and birthdates for up to 26.5 million veterans and military troops were taken from a data analyst's suburban Maryland home on May 3. Those eligible for the credit monitoring will be any of the 17 million people who are known to have had their Social Security numbers compromised.

3. A lot of AD people caught up in this too.
I know someone on AD who received notification his data was stolen; wonder if such a program would apply to him. He's already contacted the credit bureaus as you've done. :hi:

2. The VA call center doesn't know anything about this program yet.
~snip ~

Those people, who have already received warning letters from the department this month, will need to contact the VA to receive the service, said a government official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Don't bother calling yet - I just called 1-800-333-4636 & they have not been notified.

4. I think credit monitoring is all well and good but my question............
...is who will be responsible for straightening out a Military member's credit if it is breeched?? I think our Military deserve a straight forward set in stone answer to that question so that the feds can't back out later from correcting something that was their doing anyway.:grr:
