Speaker Hastert's Land Deal Questioned
Group Says Lawmaker Pushed For Highway Funding To Boost His Profits

(CBS/AP) House Speaker Dennis Hastert denied Thursday that he pushed for federal funding for a proposed highway in northeastern Illinois so he and his wife could reap about $1.8 million from land deals near their home in Kendall County.

The Sunlight Foundation, a newly created group whose declared aim is to inform the public about what members of Congress do, has accused Hastert of not divulging connections between the $207 million earmark he won for a highway, the Prairie Parkway, and an investment he and his wife made in nearby land.

The Foundation says Hastert used an Illinois trust to invest in real estate near the proposed route of the Prairie Parkway, and notes that Hastert's 2005 financial disclosure form, released Thursday, makes no mention of the trust. Hastert lists several real estate transactions in the disclosure, all of which were in fact done by the trust. Kendall County public records show no record of Hastert making the real estate sales he made public today; rather, they were all executed by the trust, the Foundation says.

In defending himself, Hastert told The Associated Press the land in question was 5.5 miles from the proposed highway.

"So, it has nothing to do with the Prairie Parkway," the Yorkville Republican said. "I owned land and I sold it, like millions of people do every day."

1. This is such bullshit. He should have recused himself from the entire
debate. The fact that he didn't suggest he had a dog in the fight.

2. "I owned land and I sold it"
Just like Martha Stewart owned stock and sold it.

You know, like millions of people do every day.

I don't live in Illinois, so I don't know if Hastert is that breathtakingly stupid, or if he thinks the people looking at this are breathtakingly stupid. Either way, it's kind of insulting. But I'm sure our ethical watchdogs in the media, like Newt Gingrich, will be on wall-to-wall coverage to denounce this corrupt land deal, just like they were on Whitewater. As near as I can tell, Whitewater was a failed speculative deal; Hastert seems to have done a mite better with his investment.

5. Hastert believes he is too important to even be questioned
The land he is talking about is farm country with only single lane road access right now. A 1600 housing development would never go in that area unless something was done about transportation.

But because Hastert says the highway makes no difference, it doesn't. Stop questioning him. End of story. And that additional land being bought in the area, just don't pay it any attention.

3. Bastert was against Jefferson's office being raided
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 11:40 AM by NI4NI
He wasn't defending the constitutional reasons for checks and balances.......it was the possibility of an investigation into his own
personal bank checks and his own personal account balances he was concerned about.

10. Speaker Hastert has blame the left wing media for his problems
Today in the local newspapers like the Beacon a right leaning paper he blame the Media for his wrong doings.Look the last time he got caught in lies it was about veterans. Then he blamed the VSO's for misrepresentation of his votes in the House. But he did not vote for veterans. So he got caught again then blamed us veterans for not making it clear to him that we wanted our benefits not cut. This person like all right wing nut cases never blame them-selfs

14. ANYBODY who goes to DC as an elected official, and BECOMES rich
while there, deserves a full investigation.. The offer themselves up as PUBLIC SERVANTS...people who "want to make a difference"...who want to REPRESENT us..

When anyone goes there as a "not so rich" person (wrestliing coach), and evolves into a real estate tycoon , has not done it legally.. You can put money on THAT bet...

Either they manipulated the law to FIT their plans, or they took money under the table and had a family member become their shill...

19. Many times the loot is made immediately after leaving office.
There needs to be a five year cooling-off period.

No lobbying.
No chairmanships.
No board of directors.
