More Than One-Third of Iraq Troops Suffering Migraines
More Than One-Third of Iraq Troops Suffering Migraines
By Amanda Gardner
HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, June 22 (HealthDay News) -- An unexpectedly high number of troops serving in Iraq are suffering from migraine headaches, researchers report.

The debilitating headaches are affecting more than one-third of U.S. soldiers in Iraq, or about twice that in the general U.S. population, according to a study being presented at the annual American Headache Society (AHS) meeting now underway in Los Angeles.

Factors like heat, stress and exhaustion can all raise risks for migraine, experts say, and could be to blame for the high incidence reported.

"Migraines are common among U.S. military personnel in a combat zone -- up to 37 percent of those in Iraq," said study lead author Dr. Brett Theeler, a neurology resident at Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, Washington, at a Thursday news conference. "This greatly exceeds the prevalence expected for the same age and gender."

1. Sad but not at all surprising, given what stress they're under

6. I have them all the time. I worked with migraines for most
of my adult life. Hard work helped some times. Still it was like having a four day hangover. Nausea, exhaustion, blurred vision, the shakes and irritability is not fun.
Heat makes it even worse. Migraines must make a horrible situation a hundred times worse.

10. Imitrex is the only thing that works for me. Head On masks the
pain until the Imitrex kicks in.

3. Desert Storm Syndrome, Part Deux...
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 07:17 PM by IthinkThereforeIAM
... quit shipping aspartame laced "die" with a T soft drinks to the desert. Plenty of information on what happens to Diet Coke and other soft drinks when sitting in the desert sun. Pilots have lost certification (civilians in Texas) due to unsteady nerves during flight tests, after having drank Diet Coke before flying.

I could go on and on. Do a google search on "aspertame desert storm syndrome".

7. Would wearing heavy helmets all the time contribute to migraines?

8. jeebus
what a thing

have to admit i was shocked that one-third of troops had this, but equally shocked that this is only twice the normal rate

i didn't know that 1 in 6 people have migraines, i've only really met one person who admitted to having them (my mom) and i've met a lot of people

11. Ave. American diet is way low on Magnesium anyhow
combine this with high stress, lots of water flushing electrolytes, and bingo -- give those troops some damn Mag everyday!!!

12. I get dehydration headaches very easily...
I have learned to drink a lot of water when I work outside as a result.

When I have had them they cause me severe pain and nausea...and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy...

I can't imagine being in a hot location without enough water to insure that I was hydrated...and these guys are wearing battle gear and probably sweating a lot...
