IT expert: I worked with 7/7 bombers and warned police
IT expert: I worked with 7/7 bombers and warned police

· Intelligence on bombers sent to detectives in 2003
· Technician helped make anti-western propaganda

Ed Vulliamy
Saturday June 24, 2006
The Guardian

A computer expert who worked alongside two of the July 7 bombers claims today
that he tried to warn the police about their activities almost two years before
the suicide attacks.

Speaking for the first time about his work, Martin Gilbertson, 45, says he produced
anti-western propaganda videos, secured websites and encrypted emails for Muslims
who were involved in an Islamic bookshop and a youth centre attended by bombers
Mohammad Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer. Mr Gilbertson was also employed to
establish firewalls that would safeguard both places from outside interference.

By October 2003, he says he was so alarmed by what he was producing in Beeston, West
Yorkshire that he went to the local Holbeck police station, saying he had material
and names he wanted to deliver to anti-terrorist officers. He was told to post his
material, and did so, to West Yorkshire police headquarters in Wakefield. The package
contained DVD material he had compiled for circulation by the bookshop, a list of
names including Khan and Tanweer and a covering letter giving a contact telephone
number.

He claims he heard nothing until he was interviewed three times by two officers from
the Metropolitan police, having contacted them after the explosions.

2. Rove probably has a deck or cards that he holds in his hands with
lots of gems like this one, and he plays them like trump cards, when he needs to.

4. This is understandable
because consider the volume of material generated by xenophobic and busybody neighbors against all Muslims in the west. I'm sure it was put into a pile to be looked at later and forgotten.

It's tragic, but understandable.

It really should be a crime to make false accusations to police because one doesn't like a neighbor's color, dress, cuisine or religion. I'm sure the cops would agree.

8. I don;'t think the majority of the tips they get
have this much documentation behind them. This was a VERY specific tip with names, addresses and spcific allegations, along with video, not just some nut calling up saying he thinks his Sikh neighbor is Osama bin-Laden.

10. The volume of information worked against its
being fully investigated. After all, what would you rather do as an overworked and underpaid detective, check out some old lady who noticed a funny smell coming from the Sikhs next door, or plow through a pile of paperwork and stack of CDs?

Unfortunately, this is what understaffing does.

3. Any Brits on DU today to comment on this?
Edited on Sat Jun-24-06 07:03 AM by rosesaylavee
Are there any LIHOP/MIHOP concerns over the bombings? Did this further fuel the "reasoning" behind staying in Iraq for the British people overall or create a justification for the govt to stay the course there?

I am sure there is corruption there just as here. Blair and *, for whatever reason, have shared their brains on this war.

Just wondering what our cousins across the water think of this.

5. Most comments I've seen
Seem to suggest that 95% of all the LIHOP/MIHOP concerns come from the US, not from people in the UK. The idea that less than 10 people out of 60 million in the UK became radicalized enough by events in the Middle East that they became bombers isn't really that shocking. The UK government certainly didn't get anything out of the bombings, unlike the * administration with 9/11. There wasn't any rise in the support for the war, most people realized that the war had almost certainly led to the bombings despite what Blair said at the time.

There's certainly a ton of resentment among Muslims in the UK, but then something like 90% of the UK population are against the Iraq war. Most people in the UK know that it's the war in Iraq that's causing real problems but the main problems appear to be coming from the far right-wing trying to stir up trouble.

I don't see the type of corruption in the UK government that would lead to a LIHOP/MIHOP situation. Certainly there are those in the government who appear to like brown paper envelopes stuffed with cash but that's far from allowing/causing bombings in the centre of London.

As to this story, I'm not sure what to think about it. I cannot make my mind up about whether the man making the claims is simply making the story up or whether the police just displayed unbelievable incompetence. Why has he waited nearly a year to come forward with the story? Why have none of the others in the story who also had concerns about the bombers come forward now or earlier? Why have none of the police he contacted ever even mentioned this before now?

publicity. Does he have a book coming out? Ooops. Sorry, that an American marketing ploy.

7. Maybe they did bother to follow
the leads provided by the IT expert, because they knew about it already -- perhaps they also had an informer or double agent on the inside, who screwed up.

12. The UK police did know about the attacks before they happened
They were taking security measures with the Israeli visitors, for example. They knew something was up.

18. Not this sh*t again!
There was one anonymous, unverified report that the Israeli embassy was given a warning minutes prior to the bombings.

A Foreign Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, had said earlier that British police warned the Israeli Embassy in London of possible terror attacks minutes before the first explosion.

That single report was refuted by Israel's Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom.

after the first explosion our finance minister received a request not to go anywhere

There is a single, unknown source for the story who has never come forward again with more information, nor has anyone else come forward to confirm the story.

It's a really good story to use to beat the anti-Israel drums though, and that's enough for some.

20. How is it "anti-Israel drums"
I think you have a persecution complex with Israel. I think the government officials of any friendly government would've been warned of terror attacks.

21. For the record...
I like Israel about as much as the next European, which is to say, not a lot.

Stories about how Israel knew this or that crop up all the time, they often try to involve Israel in world conspiracies where Mossad somehow control the world. The stories are inherently anti-Israeli. Why is it always the Israeli government or embassy that gets a warning? It's never the Argentinians or South Africans

At best the stories are laughable bullsh*t, at worst their attachment to real world events makes people viewing the stories think that everything involved in the story is some crazy conspiracy theory. Not everything in the world is the result of a zionist plot.

Why was the original story credible but the retraction un-credible?
