Megan Shannon - All Headline News Staff Writer

Dallas, TX (AHN) - E. Pierce Marshall, who battled former Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith for his father's oil fortune for years, died unexpectedly Tuesday.

Marshall, 67 died of an aggressive infection on Tuesday but the family spokesperson would not release any further details, asking that the family receive the privacy they deserve.

"Mr. Marshall leaves behind a legacy of being, first and foremost, a remarkable husband, father and grandfather, a successful business visionary and a man of unrivaled perseverance and principle," Spokesperson David Margulies released in a statement.

Marshall and Smith have been battled in court after oil tycoon, J. Howard Marshall II died in 1995. He married Smith the year before.

I debated whether this is LBN, but since we're LBNing Pasty Ramsey's death and the ancient jewelry, I found this amusingly LBN also.

7. So strange...did the family keep this under wraps?
because I've read DU every day this week and I just started reading articles about it yesterday...do they have that much power or did the press just miss this one?

8. he won't be missed
a man's wife should inherit from her husband and for him to try to break this ancient right and destroy the contract that is marriage was just too low a blow for me to stomach

i don't care who or what smith was, of course such attacks are always taken aga. unpopular and dislikable people first

she was the wife, she should have gotten the $$ w.out all this hoo ha

9. I think the "ancient right" was that the first born son should inherit
the bulk of the property, although the wife would be expected to be taken care of.

It varied a lot though, with ancient Egypt following your rule:
"She had the right to inherit whatever anyone bequeathed to her, as well as bequeathing her belongings to others."

Roman law, not so good, at least early on:
Lex Voconia (169 BC) – Women no longer can be the main heir to a dead man's estate, including cases were there are no male relative alive

It got somewhat better later, in the Christian era:
"All differences in the law of succession ati intestato of males and females were abolished by Justinian....and gave increased rights of succession to a widow....Second marriages were discouraged, especially by making it legal to impose a condition that a widow's right to property should cease on re-marriage".

Scandinavia:
"Sometime they could inherit when there were no males in their generation and sometimes they could only inherit certain types of property. Sometimes women could not inherit themselves, but passed the right of inheritance to their sons."

"Ancient" England:
The most remarkable disabilities under which women were still placed in 1910 were the exclusion of female heirs from succession to real estate, unless in the absence of a male heir;

10. Wife should not be entitled to 100%!
In Italy wife gets 50% of income generated during course of marriage. Other 50% is divided equally among offspring. Anna Nicole should have gotten 50% of income generated during her SHORT marriage to Marshall! IMHO she should not be entitled to previously acquired capital, only capital gained during her marriage.

and from what I have heard he was trying to cheat his brother out his share too. The media focused on ANS but it was her and the other son who teamed up to keep E. Peirce Marshall from cheating the both of them.

14. J Howard Marshall II became a multimillionaire through hard work....
I think he was disappointed by his sons--the one who just died & the one he disowned. Did they lack his drive to succeed because they were raised as rich boys? Did he marry Anna Nicole just to torment them after he was gone? (The disowned one was involved in one of the many cases.)

18. Isn't it Ironic........
He probably could have bought her off for about 25 million and lived a happy life without having to deal with her....But instead he chose to fight her for what amounts to him a measly sum. He spent the last years of his life in presentiment and anger over a woman who really is a goof ....I find IT ironic! He gets to die angry and she gets to go on being a goff ball.....Oh well that is what is great about life you just never know when your time is up so you better just have fun especially if you happen to be filthy rich....GET OVER IT FAST AND LIVE YOU MORON!
