Breaking News: Insurgents Reject Peace Plan

11 Sunni insurgent groups have rejected the peace plan.

They don't recognize the current Iraqi goverment.

They want a quck end to foreign troops.

Oddly - they want the UN to monitor the talks. Plus some other reasons listed in the article.

6. Good, get the UN involved...

...this may at least prompt Bushco to turn to the UN for some very needed guidance.

10. They distrust the UN, but they hate the US even more
After this fiasco of a "liberation", the UN is stating to look like their only salvation, the only way they're going to get anywhere near a sane resolution.

9. In yet another echo from Vietnam,
the article quotes an unidentified insurgent leader who says that negotiations have to be with the USA directly, and not with the "illegitimate" government led by Maliki.

There was never any chance for Maliki's plan to end the war in the immediate future. For one thing, the Bush Government has no intention of abandoning the permanent bases or the new "embassy" complex. For another thing, the insurgent "groups" cannot afford to negotiate in the open for a host of reasons, not least being the fear of being targeted by US weaponry.

The positive development is that Maliki and his "government" have publicly acknowledged the need for a political compromise that includes American withdrawal in order for the Iraq war to end.

The underlying problem for the Sunnis does not really change, unfortunately, even if a sincere dialog begins. Maliki does not control the Shiite and Kurdish militias; and more ominously, actual democracy would mean actual subservience for the Sunnis who so recently were the top dogs.

Love of democratic theory and the idea of limited goverment will not by themselves create a stable polity in Iraq.

They will work it out for themselves some day, some way. I don't think it will be pleasant, and I don't think we will be happy with the result.

But so long as we fantasize that our "power" can do anything we want it to do, including creating a "democracy" on the yonder side of the globe, the American bodies will continue to pile up and the number of aggrieved Iraqis with a grudge based on the loss of family members and comrades will continue to grow.

I think it was Art Bucwald who first made the joke during Vietnam about the weird occidental fixation with the concept of "face" and the need to save it being the only obstacle to the end of that war.

12. It ain't pretty for sure. Those who ignore the lessons of History
R doomed to repeat...

Well said. The 'deferments' pigs have lost their face a long time ago.

And all the while, the (kept) ignorant cannon fodder will continue to die or get maimed (until another wall is built?)

Hope these (unfortunate) 'second round' lessons will be remembered this time (before any other 'such mistake' even begins), but I more and more lost faith in the primitive monkey bid'ness of this species that's 'lost in space.'

13. I wish the UN was more involved in this - the US would never
hand over the management reins - too much profit to lose.

18. Truly - what would happen to Haliburton's multi-billion dollar...
... no bid contracts if the UN were to take an active hand in managing the conflict? They might be expected to do something other than line their pockets with taxpayer dollars! Heavens, the mind recoils in horror at the very thought!

19. Does this mean that we are negotiating with terrorists?
Or is it just our agents (the Iraqi government) who are?
